CJO3 EOC Review 2014-2015

Unit 1 - Crime Scene Safety O 23.02 – Discuss the potential health and safety hazards one could encounter at a crime scene. O 23.03 – Demonstrate skills and techniques to minimize risk to self and others at a crime scene. O 23.06 – Identify and explain the use of personal protective equipment for crime scene processing.

What are the four (4) types of hazards? O Chemical – Associated with chemical substances (ex. drugs, poisons, medications) O Biological – Associated with living things (ex. body fluids, animal/insect bites, toxic plants) O Physical – Associated with the environment (ex. radiation, weather, loud noises) O Safety – Cause illness, injury or death but do not fall in the other categories (ex. sharps, weapons, unstable structures)

What are the four (4) routes of exposure? O Inhalation – By the respiratory system O Interaction – Through the skin by contact or absorption O Ingestion – Through the mouth O Injection – By needle sticks or mechanical injuries

How do you safely handle and package contaminated items? O Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) based on a hazard risk assessment O Do not bend, re-cap, remove, or otherwise excessively handle contaminated sharps O Place the contaminated item in the appropriate packaging (ex. closeable, leakproof, puncture resistant) O Label the item “BIOHAZARD”

How do you exercise “universal precautions?” O Treat all blood, body fluids, and other potentially infectious materials as if they were infected with bloodborne diseases (pathogens)

What is a material safety data sheet (MSDS)? O A document… O written by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) O that can be obtained from a chemical supplier or manufacturer O that contains specific hazard information for a chemical.

How do you protect your eyes and face at a crime scene? O Complete a hazard risk assessment O Wear safety glasses or goggles even if you wear contact lenses or eyeglasses O Wear a face shield over safety glasses or goggles when there is potential for splashing, spraying or flying debris O Ensure respirators are fit tested

How do you protect your feet at a crime scene? O Complete a hazard risk assessment O Wear shoes that completely cover the foot O Further protect with disposable, impermeable shoe covers

How do you protect your hands at a crime scene? O Complete a hazard risk assessment O When wearing gloves… O Inspect for holes, punctures, and tears O Remove or turn down rings or other sharp objects O Wear a double layer of gloves when handling heavily contaminated items O Change gloves when they become torn or punctured, or otherwise compromised O Remove by the cuff and turn inside out O Discard in designated containers O Do NOT reuse!

What are the pros and cons of using latex gloves? O PROS O Resistant to mild acids, caustics, detergents, and germicides O Disposable O Cost-effective O CONS O Swell and degrade when exposed to gasoline or kerosene, excessive heat or sunlight O Allergies
