Texas involvement in the Fight for Independence.
Phillip Nolan- A filabuster from the United States went to get the approval from Spain. Spain was suspicious of United States taking control of Texas. Gutierrez Expedition- Jose Bernardo(former Hidalgo supporter)and Augustus Magee(former US soldier) organized the Republic of the North and proclaimed Texas Free from the Spain. But were defeated. Encouraged others to Free Texas from Mexico Jean Lafitte- French pirate who raided Spanish ships off Galveston. Long Expedition – James Long led an expedition to Nacogdoches and declared Texas Free from Spain. He was defeated and taken to Mexico and Shot!!!!

Jose Gutierrez de Lara Leader of the Mexican Republican Army of the North Joined Augustus McGee and his men to become the Gutierrez McGee Expedition. Supported other Filibusters. 1st Governor of Mexican Texas.

Battle of Medina Fought on August 18,1813 along the Medina River, South of San Antonio between The Spanish Royal Army and the Gutierrez McGee Expedition. Republican army lost, but encouraged others to join the Revolution.

Mexican Constitution of 1824
Written after Mexican Independence from Spain. Took the name of the United Mexican States. Had a representative government. Catholicism was the official religion. Created Coahuila y Tejas- combined two provinces.

Merger of Texas and Coahuila as a State
Merge was defined in the Constitution of 1824 Texas was not organized as a separate state because of a low population.

State Colonization Law of 1825
Set up the Guideline to Colonized Coahuila y Tejas. Allowed Stephen F. Austin and Others to receive land grant in Texas.

Slavery 1821- Colonist could bring slaves to Texas and buy land depending on the number of slaves Mexico offers full citizenship to free blacks, including land ownership. 1823- Sale and purchase of slaves are forbidden in Texas. And children of the age of 14 and up, must be freed. 1827- Outlawed the introduction of additional slaves and granted freedom at birth to slave children. 1829- Abolished slavery with an exemption in Texas 1830- Importation of Slaves Illegal
