The students will learn about the 6 essential nutrients. The students will learn the importance of the 6 nutrients and what they do for you. The students will learn about cholesterol and what it does to your body. SOL's: 9.1a, 9.1b, 9.1d, 9.1f, 9.2a,9.2b, 9.2c, 9.3c, 9.4a, 9.4b, 9.5a

Minerals The 6 Essential Nutrients are like a puzzle in that collectively/together/in one piece they keep the body running smoothly and full of energy! Nutrients covered today: Carbohydrates, proteins, water and fats 3

4 Carbohydrates What are carbohydrates?
They are sugars and starches that occur naturally in foods, mainly in plants Gives energy quickly and can be stored for later energy HALF to two-thirds of your daily energy should come from carbs Two kinds of carbs: Simple (sugars-natural & unnatural) Example: fruits, milk, some vegetables Complex (include grains) Examples: rice, pasta, potatoes (TIP: try to choose WHOLE grained carbohydrates: brown rice, wheat bread, oatmeal) BRIEF ACTIVITY: Write a few foods that you eat that you think are carbohydrates- write an S or C next to them to determine whether they are complex or simple. OR teacher has examples of carbohydrates and has students identify on their notes if it is simple or complex 4

5 FIBER: A SPECIAL Complex Carbohydrate
What is so special about fiber? It is the part of fruit, vegetables, grains, and beans that your body cannot digest. Special complex carbohydrate What does fiber DO? FIBER = A BROOM As it passes through the digestive system, fiber pushes other food particles along SO it prevents certain types of cancer What is a benefit of fiber? Cleans intestine- keeps things moving Pictures of intestines that lack fiber 5

6 Proteins What is a protein?
These are nutrients your body uses to build, repair, and maintain cells and tissues. Foods with protein: Beef, pork, veal, fish, poultry (chicken), eggs and most dairy products Puzzle Piece #2: Checking for understanding: What are proteins? 6

7 Water Why is water important? Helps you digest and absorb food
Regulates body temperature and blood circulation Carries nutrients and oxygen to cells Removes toxins and wastes from the body Protects organs and joints by cushioning them If we don’t have water? fatigue, confusion, inability to focus How much water should I drink? 8, 8 oz glasses a day or more depending on activity! 8 Fats Why do we need fat? Fat promotes healthy skin, normal cell growth and carry vitamins to where they are needed in your body! CFU: What are proteins? 8

9 Types of Fat? Saturated Fats Unsaturated Fats
These are solid at room temperature Examples: Butter, cheese, fatty meats Too much of this type can increase your risk of heart disease Unsaturated Fats Fats that remain liquid at room temperature Examples: olive oil, nuts, avocados Most of the fat in your diet should come from unsaturated!

Directions: Each person will come to the board and place one of the terms or phrases under the correct nutrient that it pertains to. The answer will be revealed on a slide at the end How many can we get right?

14 Cholesterol What is cholesterol? Fatty substance found in the blood
Too much can cause plaque to build up in the arteries Two types of cholesterol: HDL & LDL HDL: healthy, LOWERS the plaque in your arteries LDL INCREASES plaque in your arteries (higher in saturated fats)

15 How many carbohydrates?
Take a look! How much… Total fat? Saturated? Cholesterol? How many carbohydrates? Review: how do I determine if a food item has good cholesterol (hdl) or bad (ldl)? UNSATURATED foods (avocados, types of nuts, olive oil) Give students a few seconds to complete the slide (how much total fat is in a/b saturated fat (a/b) etc. and the discuss the items 15

What is the nutrient that builds and repairs muscle tissue? What is the name of healthy fat? What is an example of a food with fiber? What is cholesterol? Why do we need carbohydrates? Remind of toolbox analogy: to repair and maintain the body Puzzle: together the 6 nutrients help maintain the body’s health 16
