NATIONAL RACE TO END WOMEN’S CANCER Who We Are NATIONAL RACE TO END WOMEN’S CANCER Who We Are The Foundation for Women’s Cancer (formerly the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation) was established in 1991 by the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists (SGO) to develop educational programs for women, and create awareness about the prevention, early detection and optimal treatment of gynecologic cancers. The Foundation also supports research and training related to gynecologic cancers. Gynecologic cancers are the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells originating in the female reproductive organs. These cancers should be treated by gynecologic oncologists who are board-certified obstetricians/gynecologists and have an additional three to four years of specialized training in the biology and pathology of gynecologic cancers, as well as in all forms of treatment for these diseases, including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and experimental treatments. The Foundation also sponsors the Woman’s Cancer Network (WCN), www.wcn.org, a comprehensive women’s cancer Internet resource developed to help women discover their potential risks for gynecologic and breast cancers. The site also provides practical information for women who have developed cancer and their families, including information about their disease, available treatment options, access to emerging and experimental therapies, and gynecologic oncologists in their area.www.wcn.org The Foundation for Women’s Cancer (formerly the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation) was established in 1991 by the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists (SGO) to develop educational programs for women, and create awareness about the prevention, early detection and optimal treatment of gynecologic cancers.
