3 The Problem of Accidental Injury Leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 14. More deaths than from cancer, heart disease and SIDS. One million children under the age of 15 worldwide die from accidents each year.

5 The Economic Impact of Accidental Injuries They are the leading cause of medical spending for U.S. children ages 5 to 14. One of every five U.S. children will need medical attention for an accidental injury this year. For every U.S. child injured, the average cost is more than $12,700. That includes medical costs, future earnings lost and lost quality of life. Each year, injuries incur a total lifetime cost of $303.4 billion.

7 Safe Kids Worldwide is a grassroots organization with 16 member countries. Within these countries, there are more than 400 state and local coalitions. Safe Kids Washoe County formed as a local coalition in 2000 with REMSA as the lead agency. The Solution

10 Our Impact Since our inception in 1987 in the U.S., we have grown to more than 300 coalitions. 14 Safe Kids Programs Our programs reach families directly with injury prevention messages. They are research-based and include education, advocacy and distribution of safety devices. Every dollar raised in our community for Safe Kids stays in Washoe County to save our children’s lives.

19 Local Walk This Way Events in 2007 Worked with SIX elementary schools 100 Volunteers manned intersections teaching kids safety rules including Miss Nevada Presented safety skits at 3 schools using students to demonstrate issues specific to each school Drawing/coloring contests at 4 schools On-going safety committees

23 Not Even For A Minute Campaign Public awareness campaign about the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles – backovers, temperature, power accessory and trunk entrapment, runaway vehicles Identified a trend locally – three backover deaths in 6 months Approached by an inspired partner at Rotary Distribution points where caregivers are likely to leave kids – daycares, schools, banks, 7-11, Scolari’s, drycleaners

25 Safe Kids Worldwide – Our Goals for 2015 Reduce childhood deaths from accidental injury 25 percent in member countries. Expand the reach of Safe Kids by establishing six regional offices around the globe and growing to 75 member countries.

26 Safe Kids Washoe County – Our Strategic Plan through 2008 In the next 18 months, increase usage of Child Safety Seats from 57% to 62% Measure usage by ‘Tweens (seatbelts ages 8-15) Not Even For A Minute Project Continuation during 2007- July 2008 Build a Pedestrian Program in a Box within 12 months Continue with Walk This Way annually and expand to 5 schools in 2007/08. Double our financial support and generate $20,000 annually for Safe Kids Washoe County Our goals include:

27 We Are Making a Difference! Since 1987, fatal accidental injury in children has decreased nationwide by 43%. In 2004 in Nevada, we saw an 18% increase statewide of booster seat usage In Washoe County in 2000, there were seven children killed in motor vehicle crashes. In 2005 – there was only one.

28 How You Can Help Donations and fundraising will help implement the programs we envisioned. Coalition members are always needed for committees, events, fundraising and planning.
