3. 3 The Problem of Accidental Injury Leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 14. More deaths than from cancer, heart disease and SIDS. One million children under the age of 15 worldwide die from accidents each year.

5. 5 The Economic Impact of Accidental Injuries They are the leading cause of medical spending for U.S. children ages 5 to 14. One of every five U.S. children will need medical attention for an accidental injury this year. For every U.S. child injured, the average cost is more than $12,700. That includes medical costs, future earnings lost and lost quality of life. Each year, injuries incur a total lifetime cost of $303.4 billion.

10. 10 Our Impact Since our inception in 1987 in the U.S., we have grown to more than 300 coalitions. 27. 27 We Are Making a Difference! Since 1987, fatal accidental injury in children has decreased nationwide by 43%. In 2004 in Nevada, we saw an 18% increase statewide of booster seat usage In Washoe County in 2000, there were seven children killed in motor vehicle crashes. In 2005 – there was only one.
