Places, Vocabulary, Religion, Arts, and Food Rio Grande- The Rio Grande River starts in San Juan County, Colorado, crosses through New Mexico, runs along the Texas-Mexico border, then empties in the Gulf of Mexico. The word Rio Grande means “big river”. It is the 22 nd longest river in the world. Neches River- The Neches River starts in Colfax and ends in the Sabine Lake. It is also called Rio de Nievas which means “river of snow”. Llano Estacado- Is an area in Northwestern Texas which means, “Staked Plains”. It is basically a desert. There is barely any water, trees, and plants so there are barely any animals there, either. San Antonio- This is a very important city in Texas and maybe the most important. This is where The Alamo happened. The Alamo was a mission/presidio where Mexico defeated Texas. Texas put up a mighty fight, though. Texas went on and won the Mexican/Texas war after The Alamo. The word San Antonio actually means “Saint Anthony”. El Paso- Is the biggest city in the western part of Texas. It borders mountains and is in the middle of a desert also. El Paso means “the step” or “the way”. Del Rio- One of the most southern cities in Texas. It is right on the Rio Grande. Del Rio actually means, “of the sea” or “from the sea”. Amarillo- The biggest city in the Texas Panhandle. It’s named Amarillo because that means “yellow”. The soil almost looked yellow, there was tons of yellow wildflowers, and because the name of the city meant yellow the first houses there were painted yellow. During World War II, oil and natural gas was discovered there. Catholics- Mexico/Spain’s Mission-Presidio systems converted natives to Catholics.
