Chapter 5 The Cardiovascular System Day 1
Medical Terminology
2
Warm-up Heart Smart Quiz (front only) The Incredible Human Machine
3
Agenda: Ch.5 Lesson 1 Objective: The student will be able to define the structures and functions of the heart & blood vessels AND medical specialties of the cardiovascular system. Lesson: The Cardiovascular System (day 1) Quiz 5 on Thur, Feb 27th (A)/Friday 28th (B)
4
Medical Specialties Cardiologist Hematologist Vascular Surgeon
Specialist in diagnosing/treating diseases of the heart Hematologist Specialist in diagnosing/treating blood disorders Vascular Surgeon Specialist in surgical treatment of disorders of blood vessels
5
Heart Primary Function
Hollow muscular organ that pumps blood to the body Related Combining Forms Cardi/o, Card/o
6
Layers of the Heart Layers of the Heart Pericardium Epicardium
Myocardium Endocardium Pericardium- the surrounding layer of the heart. The heart is enclosed in a sac and that layer surrounds the heart Epicardium- the upper layer of the heart. This is the outermost layer of the heart within the sac. Myocardium- the muscle layer of the heart. This layer is the thickest, because it contains the muscle tissue that will contract to cause your heart to beat. Endocardium- the inner layer of the heart.
7
Inside the Heart Upper chambers Lower chambers Valves Valvul/o Atria
Ventricles Valves Flap to control blood flow Valvul/o
8
Blood Vessels Primary Function
Transport blood to and from all areas of the body. Includes arteries, veins, and capillaries Related Combining Forms Angi/o, Vascul/o
9
Arteries, Capillaries, & Veins
Arteries (Arteri/o) Carry blood away from the heart to the body Capillaries (Capill/o) Where arteries/veins meet Veins (Phleb/o & Ven/o) Carry blood toward the heart from the body
10
The Heart as a Pump Heartbeat Coronary Arteries
Carry blood to the heart muscle
11

Get a textbook and define the rest of your word parts list. Most of these are repeats from the previous chapters.
12
The Spark of Life Watch the video and follow along with your listening guide. Abnormal Heart Rhythms Cardiac Arrest, when the heart abruptly stops or develops an abnormal rhythm that prevents it from pumping blood Arrhythmia, abnormality or loss of normal rhythm in the heartbeat Atrial Fibrillation, rapid/irregular/uncontrolled heartbeat originating from the atria Atrial Tachycardia, rapid heartbeats originating from the atria Ventricular Fibrillation, rapid/irregular/uncontrolled heartbeat originating from the ventricles Ventricular Tachycardia, rapid heartbeats originating from the ventricles Automated External Defibrillator, portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses potentially life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias Defibrillation, shock that stops fibrillation, allowing the heart to reestablish a normal rhythm
13
Review & Looking Ahead…
Discussed: the structures and functions of the heart & blood vessels AND medical specialties of the cardiovascular system. Next class topic: Pathology and diagnostic/treatment procedures of the cardiovascular system. Reminder: Quiz 5 on Thur, Feb 27th (A)/Friday 28th (B)

16
Agenda: Ch.5 Lesson 2 Quiz 5 at the END of next class!
Objective: The student will be able to recognize, define, spell, and pronounce terms related to the pathology and diagnostic/treatment procedures of the cardiovascular system. Lesson: Cardiovascular System (day 2) Quiz 5 at the END of next class!

Formed Elements of Blood
Complete the word building Blood Red (Blood) Cells Erythrocytes Hemoglobin- iron protein that carries oxygen White (Blood) Cells Leukocytes Clotting Cells (Platelets) Thrombocytes Blood Primary Functions Brings oxygen and nutrients to the cells. Carries away waste. Erythrocytes (red blood cells) carry oxygen Leukocytes (white blood cells) fight infection Thrombocytes (platelets) help clot the blood
18
Heart Measurements Slow heart Rapid heart Blood Pressure (120/80)
Pulse ( bpm) Complete the word building Slow heart Bradycardia Rapid heart Tachycardia Blood Pressure (120/80) Hypotension-low blood pressure Orthostatic Hypotension- low blood pressure occurs upon standing Hypertension- high blood pressure

Diagnostic Procedures- Complete the Word Building
Process of recording the electrical heart Electrocardiography Record of the electrical heart Electrocardiogram Process of recording the blood vessel Angiography Process of recording the vein Phlebography Venography
20
Pathology of the Structures of the Heart
Complete the word building Abnormal enlargement of the heart Cardiomegaly Inflammation of the heart Carditis Inflammation of the surrounding heart Pericarditis Inflammation of the muscular heart Myocarditis Disease of the heart muscle Cardiomyopathy Inflammation of the inner heart Endocarditis Inflammation of a valve Valvulitis
21
Pathology of Blood Vessels
Complete the word building Inflammation of a blood vessel Angiitis/Vasculitis Abnormal narrowing of a blood vessel Angiostenosis Tumor of blood/blood vessels Hemangioma Inflammation of a vein Phlebitis Abnormal narrowing of the arteries Arteriostenosis Abnormal hardening of the arteries Arteriosclerosis Abnormal hardening from fatty plaques Atherosclerosis Tumor (deposit) of fatty plaques Atheroma
22
Pathology of Blood Vessels (continued)
Aneurysm Localized weak spot, or balloon-like enlargement of the wall of an artery
23
Pathology of the Blood Vessels (continued)
Thrombus Blood clot attached to the wall of a blood vessel Thrombotic Occlusion Blockage of a vessel by a thrombus
24
Pathology of Blood Vessels (continued)
Embolus Foreign object (blood clot, fat, tumor, air) that circulates in a blood vessel Embolism Blockage of a vessel by a embolus
25
Pathology of Blood Vessels (continued)
Angina Chest pain due to inadequate blood flow to the myocardium Myocardial Infarction Total blockage of blood flow to the myocardium Heart Attack tion-simulation
