Summary Statements—Example 11 Prose sarcastically derides the text as being able to be discussed like it were an episode of Oprah, though it could be mined for discussions on racism, poverty, and overcoming abuse.

Summary Statements—Example 12 Prose dissects Angelou’s use of language, vilifying it for being awful in its use of “mixed metaphors,” “inaccurate similes,” and confusing language, the result being “terrifying.”

Summary Statements—Example 13 Making a crushing analogy— “[it’s like] inviting doctors convicted of malpractice to instruct our medical students”—Prose believes that students should read Angelou closely and realize that her writing is muddled and poorly crafted.
