Supplemental Instruction (SI) at The PLACe Follows the UMKC model for SI SI coaches receive 12 hours of training and meet regularly with faculty and coordinator SI coaches attend (all) class meetings and hold two workshop sessions per week Began with Math for several years and developed in English the past few semesters (piloted spring 2010)

General Aspects of the Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL) Model Originated at CCNY (David Gosser, Project Director); part of Project Kaleidoscope Promotes active engagement of students in structured problem solving using a peer-led approach Helps students develop communication and team skills Improves performance and retention

How PLTL Works at Miramar College Peer Leaders Volunteer or Enroll in Service Learning Peer Leaders Attend a Training/Orientation Session held by Faculty at the beginning of the semester Peer Leaders work closely with faculty throughout the semester Peer Leaders receive a guidebook with faculty and staff contact information and helpful tips, best practices, etc.

How the Chemistry Help Room Came to Be Funding Cuts to our Campus Tutoring Budget Students needing help in their classes ~15 Faculty needing to find rooms for their own office hours ~3 PLTL leaders needed a room for their sessions.

How the Chemistry Help Room Works One single room where students can seek help for their Chemistry class. ~ 5-6 hours M-Th, 1 hr on F (unduplicated) Started on Week 2 on Monday! By the end of Week 10 ~367 hours of have been clocked in! ~41 hours are students not for their own instructors’s office hours ~90 students that are repeat customers.
