Creating a Scientific Model

Why do we use models? Simplify complex processes Accurately represent a structures Memory tool to help us learn Make predictions or to develop scenarios

Types of Models Actual physical representation also called replicas.

Types of Models- Continued Labeled drawings/ sketches Mathmatical or chemical equations

Types of Models-Continued Computer Prediction Models- allows us to predict outcomes on a large complex scale We use these when we can’t perform a traditional experiment.

How do we create a Model? Step 1: Identify the phenomenon/ What do you want to explain? Step 2: Work to refine steps/Select type of Model Step 3: Apply the theoretical/ What does the model tell us? Step 4: Apply the model.

Now try it yourself The Phenomenon will be digestion. Gross, I know but it is something you all know a little about. In this case we are going to create a Model of pictures with labels.

First bite How will you represent steps in your model? Will you sketch a person or will you use shapes?

Let’s create a Model First bite to excretion (keep it G- rated please!) To help you there is an short paragraph about digestion and also a diagram. Create your model directly into your notes. Colored Pencils are available to make it colorful if you like. YOU HAVE 10 Minutes!

Some Examples

Can your model be used in other cases?

Reading a Model Write out what is happening in the Swimmer’s itch cycle step by step.

Reading a Model What organisms must be present to complete the life cycle of the Cercariae organism? What type of organisms are “molluscan”? Why do you think the creator made two different colored arrows?
