How to type in a URL Address

What is a URL address? It is an address that tells the computer to take you to a web page. All web pages have their own URL address.

Here is an example of a URL address: http://www.weather.com

This URL address will take you to the weather channel’s website:

Let’s take a closer look at a URL Address: http:// www.weather.com Most URL addresses begin with “http” followed by a colon and 2 forward slashes.

http:// www.weather.com “www” stands for World Wide Web.

http://www. weather. com “Dots” are used to separate the different sections of the URL address.

http://www.weather.com “.com” tells you that this is a commercial website.

This is the address line.

To type in a URL address, highlight the address line by right clicking on it once. It will make it blue. http://www.weather.com

Type the new URL address beginning with “http://” http://www.whitehouse.gov

Click on “Go” or hit “Enter” on your keyboard. http://www.whitehouse.gov

Your computer will take you to the new URL address.

http://www.whitehouse.gov “.gov” tells you that this is a government website.

http://www.cccti.edu “.edu” tells you that this is a school website.

http://a4esl.org “.org” tells you that this website was created by a non-profit organization or group.
