ChloroGIN ChloroGIN is the Chlorophyll Globally Integrated Network Developed during a GOOS/POGO/GEO sponsored workshop in Plymouth, Sept 2006 Addresses GEO task EC-06-07 –“Build upon existing initiatives e.g. ANTARES in South America … to develop a global network of organization-networks for ecosystems, and coordinate activities to strengthen observing capacity in developing countries. “ ChloroGIN aims to promote in situ measurement of chlorophyll in combination with satellite derived estimates and associated products. - variable of importance for ecosystem and carbon cycle - simple and well-established measurements

ChloroGIN Network The Network presently consists of three principal Regional Centres –Latin America, South Africa, India Linked by good communications to three northern centres –UK, EC-JRC, Canada additional Regional Center in Asia in discussion (e.g. CEARAC-NOWPAP)

Progress of ChloroGIN - Indian Ocean Automatic data processing chain has been setup at Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) to process MODIS – Aqua data –Chl-a, SST, K 490 and total suspended matter (TSM) –5 - 27 N and 55 - 98 E (Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal) Daily images, weekly and monthly composites for the 4 products disseminated through INCOIS website in PNG/HDF Eight Time-series stations planned in coastal waters for monthly in-situ measurements (Chl., SST, TSM, and optical properties) IOGOOS Members endorsed ChloroGIN and requested INCOIS to provide real-time Satellite Products for the coastal regions of the following countries: –Tanzania, Iran, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Oman, Thailand INCOIS is in the process of providing MODIS data products for the above regions.

Outreach: ChloroGIN at the GEO Ministerial, Nov 2007, Cape Town ChloroGIN was exhibited at the GEO Ministerial, Cape Town. –Funded by the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem, POGO, CSIR and JRC –The exhibit consisted of two 3 x 2 m curved posters; two large plasma screens demonstrating various ChloroGIN web-sites and the IOCCG Ocean Colour film (courtesy Roland Doerffer) –The exhibit was manned by MRSU; –generated a great deal of interest from attendees ranging from school children to ministerial delegates; and did much to raise the profile of ChloroGIN.

Course Highlights 18 participants selected out of 65 applications 11 Nations represented (Africa and Eastern Indian Ocean islands) 12 lecturers and application trainers from Africa and Europe 11 computers with both Linux and Windows configuration

Funding Initiative: DevCoCast ChloroGIN has been selected as one of the demonstration systems in the EU FP7 DevCoCast, –Kick-off meeting Paris (UNESCO) 14-15 May 2008 DevCoCast uses the GEONETCast concept to provide processed land and ocean satellite data and value-added products in developing countries Regional marine data providers (PML, JRC, MARE, DMI) - to countries in Africa (Namibia, Tanzania, Ghana and Senegal) and South America (Brazil) and Asia (China) As DevCoCast develops it is hoped that additional partners will join the team. It is also expected that additional products will be developed.

Potential limitations for ChloroGIN activities If continuity of ocean colour sensors after 2010 cannot be achieved Communications bandwidth must be improved in developing countries (i.e.,could be a limiting factor for the delivery of ocean chlorophyll and related products) funding

Funding suggestions: Current ChloroGIN activities rely on minimal resources and on voluntary contributions from many members of the network, with few opportunities to compete for larger funding Need to invest major efforts in identifying resources –to consolidate the in-situ networks and ensure minimum capability at sites –to secure a full ChloroGIN meeting (e.g. early 2009) –To organize (asap) progress meeting for the Latin America ANTARES Network Possible funding sources: EU FP 7 specific call, EU Development Fund, WorldBank/GEF, IBSA –Ocean partnership Difficulties and Expectations from CBC

Expectations from CBC Outreach recommendations: Persuading other GEO member states to recognize ChloroGIN as a priority would - increase national fundings - strengthen existing activities - attract additional nations to the network Forge links with other GEO Tasks (e.g. HARON)
