2 What do good Internet Searchers Do? Think-Pair-Share!! Brainstorm with your classmates three skills an Internet Searcher must have to get good results for a research project.

4 THINK-PAIR-SHARE! With the person sitting next to you discuss two things you learned about Internet searching from this video and how you can use them in your future research projects.

5 Use Advanced Searching Google and other search engines have advanced searching? What do you infer that advanced searching is…and how do you think advanced searching can help you? Domain “gov, edu, org” can give you relevant & credible sources

6 How do you get the best search results? Searching for a topic on the World Wide Web can result in millions of Web site results. Boolean language uses the words “and, not, or” to help you get good search results for your project.

7 poverty AND crime We’re asking the search engine to find results on the combined topic of poverty and crime. In other words, each Website must have information on the combination of poverty & crime. This type of search will result in fewer records that we will retrieve.

8 cats NOT dogs We’re asking the search engine to find records ONLY on cats…nothing on dogs. This will give us fewer Web sites to read.

9 We’re asking the search engine to find Websites on TWO different topics: one topic is COLLEGE and one topic is UNIVERSITY. Therefore, our search will result in MORE Websites to read. college OR university

10 Boolify! http://www.boolify.org/ This Website demonstrates how using Boolean language can help you in your search.

11 Search Skill Review Choose appropriate keywords, and a variety of keywords for your search ex: fish, ocean, shark, sand, etc. Put quotation marks around a phrase to get a specific result ex: “sand sharks” Use search engines that offer advanced searches with Boolean operators “and, not, or” Use “gov, org, edu” in the advanced search domain Form your search into a question and use on Ask.com ex: Where do sand sharks live?

12 Go Fish!!! Read the topic questions on your worksheet. Use a highlighter to choose a variety of keywords that you will use to perform a search on the Internet. After performing your search, read your Website information, and prepare a correctly formatted MLA citation.
