Case Study 1 – Speech & Language Therapy

Purpose: Online student-led journal club Design: This journal club evolved from an existing online network for Speech & Language Therapy students. One student intern developed the idea of an online journal club for SLT students. Structure: The interns work alongside the academic members of staff to relate the journals and articles to themes within the programme. The programme team help to embed the journal club into the programme making it more sustainable. Content: The interns locate the journals or materials, then posts questions relating to them for a 6 week cycle. Students are required to answer a certain number of questions and then at the end of the ‘cycle’ the students receive a summary sheet from all of the responses provided. Dissemination: The journal club is promoted to students in all year groups and by the programme team to help develop critical thinking and analytical skills. Our student intern Amanda who developed this project has just been awarded the regional Student Employee of the Year award for Wales for her work on the Speech and Language Journal Club.

Case Study 2 – Architectural Design & Technology

Purpose: To help support students to develop their skills within specific software packages requirement for the AD&T programme, as well as promoting interaction between year groups and providing careers information. Design: The network was designed to provide a supportive environment that was intuitive to the students on the AD&T programme but also accessible and engaging. Structure: Two student interns were hired to produce and gather content for the site and worked closely with the programme team to meet the programme requirements and to help embed the materials within the programme content. Content: The network provides students with video tutorials relating to the software used within the programme, as well as module information, support and careers information. The video tutorials were developed by both the student interns and the programme team, as well as inviting other students to share their own tutorials. Dissemination: The network is embedded in the programme content and the programme team have developed an assessment for students to create their own tutorials and upload them onto the network.

Purpose: The network will provide the students with a central location tailored to them, for module & staff information, social events, careers and placements. Design: The network has been designed as a one-stop-shop for students on both the Accounting and the Accounting & Finance programmes. Structure: The network content was developed by 4 student interns from the above programmes, working closely with the programme team to meet the needs of the programme and its students. Content: The network provides students with a range of information but also provides them with a social element, via a discussion board and social events arranged by the student interns, to promote interaction between year groups. Dissemination: The network and content is available to both the Accounting and the Accounting & Finance programmes. The network was released for module choice information in March 2015.
