morville@semanticstudios.com 19 The Influence of Assortment Structure on Perceived Variety and Consumption Quantities by Kahn and Wansink, Journal of Consumer Research (article)article It is widely assumed across disciplines that increasing the actual variety of an assortment increases the quantity consumed. We show, however, that the perceived variety of an assortment also robustly drives consumption even when actual variety is unchanged. For small sets, disorganized assortments may appear to have more perceived variety, but the opposite might be true for assortments with a large mix of different options.
