Why use an iPhone Camera? 1.Always have it with you – get shots you would otherwise miss 2.Can create images with a feeling of intimacy, immediacy, authenticity and fun – a different aesthetic from 'ultimate quality' (eg 'Fine Art' on a gallery wall) see http://visualsciencelab.blogspot.com.au/2013/10/the-graying-of-traditional- photography.htmlhttp://visualsciencelab.blogspot.com.au/2013/10/the-graying-of-traditional- photography.html – especially useful for street photography (unobtrusive & ultimate quality not essential) – great for happy snaps and record shots - unpretentious 3.Does some things a DSLR can't – very wide depth of field – very close focus 4.There is a whole other world out there - try a Google search on iphoneography – eg see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhoneographyhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhoneography

What About Image Quality? 1.iPhone is not as good as a DSLR – not ‘Ultimate Quality’ – but good enough for many purposes and can sometimes get exhibition quality images (eg A3+ prints) but often images are noisy, even at 50 ISO 2.Manual Mode is possible using Apps, such as 645 Pro (my preferred) and Camera+ – For instance, with 645 Pro: set exposure and focus point separately; live histogram; shutter delay; ability to lock exposure, focus and white balance (eg for making stitched panoramas); Ref: http://jag.gr/645pro/http://jag.gr/645pro/ – With 645 Pro, can also use "dRAW" (ie Tif files with no JPEG compression)

What About Image Processing Apps? 1.There is a vast array of Apps available – they can do basic editing or highly stylised post processing – can also do Stitched Panoramas, HDR, Long Exposure and Mirror Images 2.Generally, anything the Apps can do, Photoshop (or plug-ins, such as Nik software) can do better – except that Apps allow instant gratification and on-line sharing 3.A discussion of Apps is beyond the scope of tonight's presentation – but could cover in a later presentation, if there is interest

Examples of iPhone Photos (1) The following examples of iPhone photos illustrate its capabilities – Close up and wide depth of field – General purpose, always at hand – Street photography – Apps for slow shutter stitched panoramas High Dynamic Range mirror images

Examples of iPhone Photos (2) 1.The photos are mostly straight off my iPhone – with some on-phone post-processing 2.They don’t pretend to be brilliant – Are just to illustrate the capabilities of the iPhone 4S and some Apps 3.For photos intended as prints or exhibition – I normally do the post-processing in Photoshop Some of the following photos were processed in PS
