The Raging of Galilee Storm on the Sea
The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Deuteronomy 31:8

The Facts, Please! The Sea of Galilee is a lake whose waters are blue and sweet. They come from the Jordan River, which enters the lake by a steep descent. For over 25 miles the river fall at the rate of 60 feet for each mile to arrive at the lake.

The Facts, Please! The Bible give four names to this lake: the Sea of Chinnereth, the Lake of Gennesaret, the Sea of Tiberius, and the Sea of Galilee.

The Facts, Please! This lake, about 13 miles long and 7 miles wide at its widest point, is shaped something like a harp. (The Hebrew word chinnereth mean “harp-shaped.”) Except on the southern side, the lake is surrounded by steep cliffs and mountains that rise sharply from its shores, some as high as 2,700 feet.

The Facts, Please! Sudden storms come in over the mountains and stir the water up into violent 20-foot waves. A boat can leave the shore in a calm sea and be caught in a vicious storm before reaching the other side.

The Facts, Please! Several of Jesus’ disciples were fishermen who lived near the Sea of Galilee and earned their living by fishing in its waters. They were used to the frequent storms, but a storm came one evening that was not like any they had ever seen. It frightened even those seasoned sailors.
