The beginning… London Paris Madrid New York City Moscow - the winner! 9 cities had submitted bids to host the 2012 Olympics by deadline of 15 July 2003 On 18 May 2004, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), as a result of a scored technical evaluation, reduced the number of cities to five: London, Madrid, Moscow, New York and Paris On 6 July 2005, the final selection was announced at the Raffles City Convention Centre in Singapore, where the 117th IOC Session was held

The 2012 Summer Olympic programme features 26 sports London's bid featured 28 sports but the IOC voted to drop baseball and softball from the 2012 Games two days after it selected London as the host city Boxing is the only Summer Olympic sport that does not include events for women Karate, squash, golf, roller sports and rugby sevens were considered to be brought in but these events didn’t have enough votes The 2012 Summer Olympic programme features 26 sports: Sports aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoe and kayak, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling

Tickets Tickets for the London 2012 Olympic Games go on sale in 2011 At least 50% will be priced under £20 (350 EEK) London will aim to repeat the success of the Manchester Commonwealth Games, where 90 per cent of seats were sold Each ticket will also include free travel on public transport in London for the day of the event There will be free events - including the Road Cycling, Triathlon and Marathon

Funding The total bugdet is £9,4 billion (159 billion EEK) Money comes from: 64% (£6 billion) from Central Government 23% (£2,2 billion) from National Lottery 13% (£1,2 billion) from the Mayor of London and the London Development Agency The costs for staging the Games (£2 billion) are funded by a combination of sponsorship, merchandising, ticketing and broadcast rights The budget is raised and managed by the London 2012 Organising Committee

Athletes Nations participating: 205 (204 in Beijing) Athletes participating: 12 500 (11 025 in Beijing) The Olympic Village will have 17 320 beds and provide each athlete with 16 sqm floor space Each apartment will have a TV, internet access, a private courtyard The dining hall will cater for 5 500 athletes at a time 93 per cent of training venues are to be within 30 minutes of the athletes village

Logo Early public reaction to the logo, as measured by a poll on the BBC website, was largely negative: more than 80% of votes gave the logo the lowest possible rating Several newspapers have run their own logo competitions, displaying alternative versions from their readers Official movie clip with this logo is reported to trigger seizures in a small number of people with photosensitive epilepsy
