1 Michigan Service Scholars Site Supervisor Training 2008-2009

2 Michigan Service Scholars AmeriCorps Program MSS program will provide $300,000 statewide to students attending any of the 42 member campuses. Grant to distribute Education Award from the Michigan Community Service Commission and the Corporation for National Community Service.

3 The MSS program 300 students willing to complete 300 hrs of community service during one calendar year will be awarded a $1000 scholarship (Education Award). 20% of those hours can be used for training (60 hours). Training is any volunteering that is not part of the program or workshops/conferences to improve a member’s skills. 10% of those hours can be from fundraising hours (30 hours). Fundraising hours can only be for programmatic fundraising – not operations. Only 300 spots and it is first come first serve; so enroll early!

4 Areas of Member Service can include: Community Based Research Community Service Federal Work Study Special Projects Student Positions on Campus Student Organizations

5 2 General Areas of Service Volunteer Recruitment Indirect service to recruit additional volunteers to participate in a service project, event, program, etc… Hours served in this area may be done at any type of non-profit community organization or higher education institution. Examples: You are serving for Habitat for Humanity or your campus community service/service-learning office to recruit student organizations to participate in service. Community Service Helping a non-profit organization through volunteer service Hours served in this area may be done at any type of non-profit community organization or higher education institution. Examples: Cleaning up a river, volunteering at the local hospital, mentoring a child or any other service opportunity.

6 Important Changes Service done internationally is not acceptable Students may not be paid at all for their service. Academically-required service is not eligible (internships, mid-tiers, observation hrs.) Service Learning courses count. Members can’t do the same work as staff. Grad Students Are Eligible (not a change)

7 Important Changes Part 2 Each student will be required to meet with the campus supervisor, either one-on-one or as a group prior to turning in their application The supervisor must sign each application verifying they have met with the student and that they believe they will be able to serve all 300 hours. MCC will provide points to cover at the meeting. Supervisors can add their own materials and concepts.

9 Enrollment Process Before the trainings, we’ll send: –Directions/Map –Other Workshop information –All available online Members Bring (Copies): –Drivers License –Proof of citizenship (birth-certificate, passport, or equivalent) –Member Application (unless you fax) Provided at Training: –Enrollment Form –Member Contract –Enrollment Survey –Member CD (w/ All Required Documentation) MEMBERS MUST COME ON TIME AND STAY FOR ENTIRE TRAINING. MEMBERS MUST BE ENROLLED AT AN MCC MEMBER INSTITUTION AT ENROLLMENT BUT NOT NECESSARILY AFTER.

14 Timesheets Timesheets can be found on the supervisor CD, member CD and also on the MSS website. All timesheets will be completed electronically. Training can only count for up to 20% of the total 300 hours. Fundraising hours can only count for 10% of the total 300 hours. Check for the names of all different agencies served during the month and contact address, phone, and e- mail for the agency. New Great Stories Template What were your struggles this past year?

15 More about Timesheets Collect timesheets as an attachment from your members for approval within 5 days of the end of the month. Timesheets must be submitted each month even if the number of hours logged is zero. If timesheets are not submitted within 60 days of the deadline, the member will automatically receive a zero for that month. Prolonged delinquency in the submission of timesheets may result in the member being terminated from the program. Make paper copies and/or save your monthly timesheets on a disk. Send the timesheets to mss@micampuscompact.org. Only electronic submissions will be accepted. You must put the text “Approved” in the body of the email. 17 Prohibited Activities A. Attempting to influence legislation. B. Organizing or engaging in protests, petitions, boycotts, or strikes. C. Assisting, promoting or deterring union organizing. D. Impairing existing contracts for services or collective bargaining agreements. E. Engaging in partisan political activities or other activities designed to influence the outcome of an election to any public office. F. Participating in, or endorsing, events or activities that are likely to include advocacy for or against political parties, political platforms, political candidates, proposed legislation, or elected officials. G. Engaging in religious instruction; conducting worship services; providing instruction as part of a program that includes mandatory religious instruction or worship; constructing or operating facilities devoted to religious instruction or worship; maintaining facilities primarily or inherently devoted to religious instruction or worship; or engaging in any form of religious proselytization. H. Providing a direct benefit to: A for-profit entity; A labor union; A partisan political organization; An organization engaged in the religious activities described in the preceding subclause, unless Grant funds are not used to support the religious activities; or A nonprofit entity that fails to comply with the restrictions contained in section 501(c) (3) of U.S. Code Title 26. I. Voter registration drives by AmeriCorps members are an unacceptable service activity. In addition, Corporation funds may not be used to conduct voter registration drives. J. Other activities as the Corporation determines will be prohibited, upon notice to the Grantee. K. Fundraising for any activity that does not directly pertain increasing the volunteer capacity of the community partner.

19 My AmeriCorps Website This is the ONLY way to get education awards. University/College must be registered as well. We can help with that. Students can register immediately, but info about award won’t be on for 2-4 weeks after exiting. Laura will log us in to see it. There is currently NO interface for you, us or the Commission.

20 Will be performed prior to start of service. MSS has the right to deny acceptance based on results. Perspective members are given an opportunity to explain the results of the background check.
