2 Ben Franklin said: Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise. He that lieth down with dogs shall rise up with fleas. If you would not be forgotten As soon as you are dead and rotten, Either write things worthy reading, Or do things worth the writing. This will be the best security for maintaining our liberties. A nation of well-informed men who have been taught to know and prize the rights which God has given them cannot be enslaved. It is in the religion of ignorance that tyranny begins. Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do.

5 Ben knew his brother wouldn’t publish his works so at 16 years old started writing under the name of Silence Dogood. Became popular Brothers fought Franklin left Boston and his brother moved to Philadelphia on October 8th, original printing press Franklin used

8 Franklin - Printer 1729 Started publishing The Pennsylvania Gazette. 1730 married Deborah Atkins 1732, Franklin published his first almanac- Poor Richard's Almanack Most printed book in the colonies Almanac- book published yearly

9 Almanacs of the era were printed annually, and contained things like weather reports, recipes, predictions and homilies.

11 1752, Franklin performed his famous kite experiment with the aid of his twenty-one year old son, William. Invented Lightning Rod Franklin coined the electrical terms we use today, such as battery, positive/negative, and chargeelectrical terms Franklin invented the medical instrument known as a cathetercatheter

12 At 70, Franklin delegate to Second Continental Congress Postmaster of the Colonies Head of the Committee of Safety, whose function was to defend the colonies. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin, to begin formulating the Declaration of Independence.

14 Constitutions Convention 1787 1787,. A Constitutional Convention was called in hopes of designing a more efficient form of government with the appropriate balance between state and central authority. Appointed as a delegate from Pennsylvania, Benjamin was the oldest member in attendance on September 17, 1787 He was transported to and from the meeting hall on a sedan chair. He backed the document and the new form of government it established.

15 Franklin quietly passed away on April 17, 1790, surrounded by his grandchildren. Franklin's funeral, on April 21, was an enormous public spectacle. Over twenty thousand citizens gathered to pay a tribute to the American hero. Buried in a plot beside his wife, Deborah, and son, Francis.

17 There were four key documents which led to the formation of the United States of America. Ben was the only person to sign all four documents. They are: 1. The Declaration of Independence: it declared the American colonies independent from English rule. 2. The Treaty of Alliance with France: it brought French money, troops and arms to the American colonies to aid their fight against England. 3. The Treaty of Paris: it ended the American Revolution and recognized the independence of the United States. 4. The Constitution of the United States: it describes the laws of the United States.
