2 Rule 4 Use a comma to show a pause after an introductory word.
Example: Yes, the spider was a little scary. No, it is not time to leave.

3 Rule 5 Use a comma after one or more prepositional phrases at the beginning of a sentence. Example: At the sound of the starting gun, the race began. From the start, I knew I would win.

4 Examples Oops did I do that? Well be home by ten o’clock.
So what do you think? At the end of the game our team ate pizza to celebrate. After you have finished eating please do your homework.

5 Examples When the bell rang class was over.
In the morning you will go to basketball practice. At the end of a long day my dad likes to watch football. In case you are absent Sarah will attend the meeting.

6 Rule 6 Use a comma to mark interruptions in a sentence.
Words or phrases that are not necessary. Example: 1. Kevin was, of course, surprised by the party.

7 Rule 6 Mrs. Shaw a gymnast will show us the stunt.
This book is about geology the science of the earth.

8 Rule 7 If you use a name in direct address (talking directly to that person), use commas to set the name off from the rest of the sentence. Example: Tell me, Fred, about your vacation. Jake, did you go anywhere?

Spaghetti a thin pasta can be served with different sauces. Ted will you watch the babies? Mr. Smith your new math teacher starts on Monday.

10 Rule 8: Use a comma to set off states and countries.
We traveled from Mobile, Alabama, to Nashville, Tennessee. I want to visit Venice, Italy, next summer.

11 Rule 9: Use a comma to set off years (in a full date) and days.
The plane left on Tuesday, May 4, 2001, from Alabama. Their wedding date was set for August 5, 2000, in the college chapel in Newton, Massachusetts.
