TED 190 Ed Seminar Field

Ed Seminar Field Will be conducted at a school district of your choice. Depending on scheduling, you could visit your home school district. Can request to be placed with 1 or 2 teachers in the same district as you desire. Schedule 2 or more visits (10 hours total).

About Ed. Seminar Field Mrs. Brague and Dr. Steve will prepare a letter of entry into the school to secure permission for you to attend. Next week, bring a copy of your clearances (and a copy of your TB test if you have it) to include with the letter.

Applying for Ed. Seminar Field On this form: –Provide contact information. –Request a placement (district, grade level, and optionally specify a building). –Provide an update on clearances.

Status of Clearances For each clearance: Have clearance. (Applied & received clearance. Ready to submit a copy.) Applied but have no proof. (Applied for clearance, but have no proof at this time.) Did not apply. [Note: You must apply for this clearance immediately.]

Field Assignment By Next Week… Bring (or Apply for) Clearances 1.Print and bring one copy of the 4 professional clearances to submit. 2.Apply for clearances (if you do not already have them). If you do not have all clearances, submit what you have. Apply for other clearances immediately. Most schools require clearances before entry.

TED Admission Requirements (Traditional Students) Must have a “B” average in high school, OR must be in the top half of their graduating class. Demonstrated interest and experience in teaching. Must meet essential performance demands (EPD’s). Becoming a TED student is tough!

TED Admission Requirements (Transfer Students) Demonstrated interest and experience in teaching. Must meet essential performance demands (EPD’s). Plus: –Must have a GPA of at least 3.0. –Demonstrate basic skills by taking and passing PAPA tests (replaces the PRAXIS I PPST’s). –Must possess clearances required by Act 34, 151, and 114.

Essential Performance Demands Senses and perception (visual, auditory, and from multiple sources). Temperance (emotional control). Time management. Organization. Written & spoken language. Gross and fine motor skills. Strength and stamina. These are all required to be a teacher in Pennsylvania!

Essential Performance Demands 1.In a small group, you will be assigned 1-2 essential performance demands (EPD’s). 2.Discuss in a small group what this implies about the teaching environment/profession. –In other words, what does it say about what a teacher has to be able to do on the job? ACTIVITY If you feel you might have difficulty meeting any of the EPD’s, please contact your advisor to discuss.

State-Required Tests for Teachers 1.PAPA: 3 modules Taken in freshmen year. Must pass all 3 by end of sophomore year. 2.Praxis II certification tests Taken in senior year. Understanding PAPA PAPA (Pre-service Academic Performance Assessment) 3 tests: Reading. Writing. Math. Designed to measure basic communication ability. PAPA replaces PPST (Praxis I) tests.

Transfer and Existing Students If you are an existing student who has already taken the PPST/Praxis I tests, you will not be required to take PAPA, but should continue taking the PPST's until you complete them.

PAPA Is Required Testing PDE requires the PAPA for certification. TED elects to require the test as a criteria for formal program admission

When to Take the Tests Traditional students: Take all 3 PAPA tests (Reading, Writing, Math) at least once within their first 24 credits completed at MU (Freshman year). Must pass all PAPA tests within their first 48 credits completed (Sophomore year). Must pass PAPA by end of sophomore year. 24/48 Rule

When to Take the Tests Non-traditional/transfers: Take all 3 PAPA tests (Reading, Writing, Math) at least once within their first 12 credits completed at MU. Must pass all PAPA tests within their first 24 credits completed. 12/24 Rule

What Are the PAPA Tests Like? Reading (45 minutes): –40 selected-response items (multiple choice). Mathematics (60 minutes): –40 selected-response items (multiple choice). –Formulas page and online calculator are provided. Writing (75 minutes): –40 selected-response items (multiple choice). –2 sentence correction assignments. –1 extended-response assignment (essay).

How Much Does PAPA Cost? $89 for all three modules if taken together. $37 per single module ($111 total). Payment method: –Visa or MasterCard credit card, debit card, or check card (that does not require PIN entry). –Check (contact for instructions).

Alternate Testing Arrangements Extended time or alternate testing arrangements can be made if you can document one of the following: –Physical disabilities (e.g., visual impairments, hearing impairments, motor disabilities, illness, injury). –Learning or cognitive disabilities. Submit form found online to see if you qualify.

When Do I Learn My Results? Reading and Math: –Test results: At the conclusion of your test session. –Score reports: Available within 10 days after testing. Writing: –Score reports are available within 20 business days after testing.

PAPA Scoring The cut-off score to pass the PAPA modules is 220. But – the passing score in Pennsylvania depends on your GPA. –Passing score is based on how large groups of test takers perform on tests. –These scores are subject to change in the future by PDE.

What If You Don’t Take or Pass the PAPA? Status is reviewed by TED Faculty at every semester’s end. Dismissed from TED under 24/48 rule (12/24 rule for transfers) ! –If you did not take all 3 tests in first 24 credits (12 credits for transfers). –If you did not pass all 3 tests in 48 credits (end of sophomore year) (24 credits for transfers).

What If You Don’t PAPA? Actual Process: –You actually have 1 semester of grace after you go beyond the 24/48 (or 12/24) credit rule. –You will be placed on Departmental Probation for one semester. –During this time you must retake the failed tests. If you still fail (or fail to take) the tests, you will be dismissed from TED.
