Recycling
2
Some key vocabulary recycling to recycle reuse refuse/rubbish
to throw away to protect to destroy carbon footprint
3
What can be recycled? Most items can now be recycled! These items are:
tin cans glass bottles and jars paper cartons cardboard In some regions, you put certain items, for example, glass, into a certain coloured bag, for example, blue. In other regions, all materials that can be recycled are put into green bins. The council collects the bin once a fortnight and takes it away
4
Recycling So, what happens to our rubbish once it has been recycled?
This video will tell us more!
5
So, why recycle? Recycling is one way of protecting the environment
Items that are recycled can be made into new things – so, the milk carton that you throw away can be used to make a new car or even an aeroplane! Other ways of saving energy are switching off lights when you leave a room, using public transport as much as possible and not using too much water.
6
So, why recycle? Did you know that the rainforest used to cover 14% of the surface of the world? What percentage does it now cover? By 2050, scientists think that all the rainforests will have disappeared Why do we need the rainforest? We cut down trees to make paper – by recycling paper, we make sure that no more trees need to be destroyed
7
Recycling in Britain Britain takes recycling seriously, and nearly every region encourages people to recycle their rubbish Worcester is the most successful recycling county in Britain!
8
Recycling in Britain There is even a Minister for Energy and Climate Change, Ed Miliband His job is to introduce new energy options and help cut carbon emissions. His department represents Britain around the world

Recycling in Britain Meet the extraordinary Strauss family!
They recycle everything they possibly can, including food, glass and cardboard. The only things they can’t recycle are crisp packets and some plastics. They put these in their usual rubbish bin, which is only collected once a year! “We try to think about what we’re throwing away,” says Mrs Strauss.
10
Recycling The environment is an issue which interests a lot of young people This eleven-year-old boy founded a business in America which aims to cut carbon emissions Do you worry about green issues?
