2 Quick Bio Born in Mexico City in 1967 Bachelors in Science in Physical Chemistry 1989 from Concordia University in Montreal His science background inspired and often helps with the interactive installations he creates. Known for large scale interactive installations Off his site: He has received two BAFTA British Academy Awards for Interactive Art in London, a Golden Nica at the Prix Ars Electronica in Austria, “Artist of the year” Rave Award from Wired Magazine, a Rockefeller fellowship, the Trophée des Lumières in Lyon and an International Bauhaus Award in Dessau. He has lectured at Goldsmiths college, the Bartlett school, Princeton, Harvard, UC Berkeley, Cooper Union, USC, MIT MediaLab, Guggenheim Museum, LA MOCA, Netherlands Architecture Institute, Cornell, UPenn, SCAD, Danish Architecture Cente, CCA in Montreal, ICA in London and the Art Institute of Chicago.

4 “What you give is what you get.” Lozano-Hemmer’s work deals a lot with presence Work often uses the audience as an element of the work A lot of pieces record (whether visually as in Sandbox, as a pulse in all his Pulse pieces, or as the objects they give up in Please Empty Your Pockets) - Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Art 21 After working for twenty years at the intersection of performance, architecture, and critical studies, I’m very curious about creating platforms for self-representation and participation. My work is incomplete and experimental in nature. The platforms require people to participate, they require people to be aware of the events and then take the piece in a direction that suits them. -Rafael Lozano-Hemmer said during an interview for Art 21 when asked to talk about his workinterview for Art 21
