2
Archaebacteria Archae - Archaic meaning ancient Single celled Prokaryotic – lack a nucleus Live in extreme environmental conditions.
3
Eubacteria Live in soil, water, on or in the human body. Familiar kind of eubacterium converts milk into yogurt. Another kind causes pneumonia.
4
Archaebacteria and Eubacteria
5
Protista Protists – single celled or simple multicellular Eukaryotes – contain a nucleus, organelles Evolved from ancient bacteria. Do not “fit” in any other kingdom Examples: Protozoans – animal like Algae – plant like
7
Fungi Complex, multicellular Do not photosynthesize. Absorb nutrients from substances in their surroundings. Use digestive juices to break down substances. Examples : Molds Mushrooms
8
Plantae Eukaryotic – contain cell walls Vary in size and form. Make food through photosynthesis Exposed to sunlight – found on land or in water where sunlight can penetrate. Most living things get nutrients from plants. Plants are producers. Provide a habitat for other organisms.
9
Animalia Complex, multicellular Lack cell walls Usually move around Respond quickly to their environment Specialized sense organs. Dependent upon organisms from other kingdoms. Plants – food source Bacteria or fungi – recycle nutrients found in dead organisms.
