The Problem 0 Monterey County Health Department 0 The stresses related to acculturation into the U.S. has caused Hispanic men to abuse alcohol; therefore, the Hispanic community should be educated with culturally relevant information on this topic to prevent further negative outcomes and decrease the social and physical harms of alcoholism.

Findings Causes: Stress from… 0 Acculturation (Immigration) 0 Socioeconomic (Poverty) 0 Minority (Lack of Education) Effects: 0 Liver disease 12 th cause of death in U.S. (Nguyen, 2008, p. 1060). 0 6 th leading cause of death for Hispanic males (Carrion, 2011, p. 834). 0 Hispanics are less likely to seek counseling 0 Young children surrounded by abuse 0 Study found 47.6% of Hispanic high school students have used alcohol in past 30 days (King, 2010).

Synthesis 0 Call to Action: 0 Call to Action: Department step up to provide services to the Hispanic community (a growing population). 0 Excessive alcohol intake can cause further social problems, such as divorce, job loss, and legal problems (Caetano, 2003). 0 Spanish language materials that discuss the effects of alcohol for adults and use to provide prevention (Pearson, 2009, p. 5).
