WHEN AND HOW WILL YOU DO THIS? 1.Note form summary 2. Explanation of how language and visuals have been used to persuade about 3 of the main points in the summary (Task material approx. 350 words + visuals) 27 minutes/27 minutes 30% exam

HOW CAN YOU GET BETTER AT IT? 1. NOTE FORM SUMMARIES First you need to understand the criteria Marking scheme: 5 marks= 5 main points 3 marks= clarity and conciseness 2 marks= NFS conventions

MAIN POINTS WHAT IS A ‘MAIN POINT’? HOW DO YOU FIND THEM?

CLARITY Clearness of perception or understanding

CONSISENESS Covering a lot in few words; brief but comprehensive in ideas Synonym: succinct.

NFS conventions Symbols Don’t use full sentences Look for connections (but not too many) Highlight the main 5 points and the overall recommendation (see slide 5)

NFS Why do you need to do this? To examine/summarise WHAT has been written

ESSAY/EXPLANATION 3 PARAGRAPHS WHATS THE POINT OF THEM? To make connections between the language of the writer and the effect of the language on readers. In other words: to examine HOW and WHY the article/webpage/editorial etc has been written

TECHNIQUE Examples: Tone Emotive language Attacks Hyperbole Appeals Inclusive language Anecdotes Statistics Expert evidence Rhetorical questions Listing Repetition Alliteration Visual evidence WHAT IS A ‘TECHNIQUE’? This is the HOW part. HOW does the writer try to convince us? What methods are used?

EXAMPLE EXAMPLE- describe the technique. Give the actual words or a description of the technique. When would you not be able to give the exact words of the example?

EFFECT EFFECT- what is the probable effect on readers? What would probably be the result of this article? This is the hardest part of your paragraphs. You need to think abut WHY the writer has written the article. What is the purpose of it? What is the effect s/he wants to have on the audience?
