Presentation to the Town of Peace River Monday, October 27, 2014

Mission Statement To provide shelter and temporary refuge to those animals that are homeless or are in need of respite from cruelty or neglect

1985 ◦ Peace River SPCA was established by several animal loving people ◦ Saw the increase in homeless and abandoned animals in the area and recognized the need for a local shelter ◦ No animal shelter in close proximity ◦ Felt it was important to promote spaying and neutering of pets

Find forever homes for adoptable animals Reunite lost pets with their owners Help control pet overpopulation through spaying and neutering Educate the community about responsible animal care Play an active role in the community Work with/for the Town of Peace River as animal control officers and pet licensing Assist the Alberta SPCA with housing and re-homing pets

From 2008 to 2013 our shelter has taken in 4582 dogs and cats This is an average of 764 animals per year! Does not include the numerous birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, hamsters, snakes, lizards and hermit crabs Euthanasia rates have dropped significantly 48% of the animals come from the Town of Peace River (2013)

We have outgrown our current space Building in poor condition – roof repair, new furnace, mechanical and electrical in dire need of upgrade Increase of animals in the shelter Staff and animal safety Lack of isolation facilities Small Outdoor area New potential revenue – boarding kennels, dog wash area, public events, off leash area Education and training – for staff, board and community members

1) Acquire land by donation or purchase and build new 2) Purchase a building and customize the inside/outside for our needs 3) If possible lease town site and build in phases 4) Consider regional alternatives/opportunities

Save and protect more animals Offer new programs to assist with spay/neuter Offer dog training facility Provide off leash area for community and shelter dogs Offer proper refuge for pocket pets and birds Focus on education – responsible pet care, speakers Provide more community orientated programs – learning days, volunteer training, adoption events, child day camps

Develop a capital campaign Reach out to local municipalities Approach local business Apply for grant dollars Apply for eco friendly building grants (CBIP)
