Which do you associate with art; music, dance and theatre ;the arts in general? Exhibition, opera house, masterpiece, portrait, abstract, sculpture, concert hall, ballet, shade, watercolours, sketch, canvas, art gallery, ballerina, tenor, drawing, frame, stage, applause,oil painting, soprano, carving, landscape, creative, audience.

Discuss the following questions: What makes a work of art famous and expensive? Why do people collect works of art? Why is an artist’s life often difficult? How can we help young artists realize their potential?

Expressing likes: I like… very much indeed. I’ve always loved… There’s nothing I like more than… I’m really fond of… … is terrific/great/superb/glamorous etc. It’s too lovely for words. It’s a must. It’s worth a visit. It’s ok if you’re into that sort of thing. I really recommend it.

Expressing dislikes: I’m afraid I don’t like… I’ve never liked…,I’m afraid. …is not my favourite… I really hate… I think … pretty awful/really unpleasant. I’m not really keen on… … is ghastly/rubbish. I can’t say …appeals to me very much. It’s not my cup of tea. If I were you I’d give it a miss.

Expressions about art: You call that art? It’s a masterpiece. What’s it supposed to be? It all looks the same to me. So what exactly is cubism then? It’s so detailed, I can’t believe it.I just love bright colours. I prefer abstract art. Dali and people like that. I like landscapes. It must be a fake. I like art, but I’m not really all that arty. I do a bit of pottery. It’s very original. I’m taking an art appreciation class. His work is being exhibited.
