Expert 21, Course III Vol. 2, page 9 Day 2

Ten Artists Who Changed the World

Meaning: showing imagined things instead of showing what people or objects actually look like Example: I like realistic art more than abstract art because I can tell what things are supposed to be.

Meaning: something whole formed in a certain way from parts Example: This painting has a balanced composition, since it shows half sky and half ground.

Meaning: a public display of works of art or objects of special interest Example: Mr. O’Callaghan’s art class will have an exhibition in the spring. All pieces will be student-created.

Meaning: a drawing, painting, or photograph of a person Example: The portrait of your sister looks exactly like her.

Meaning: the effect that something has on something else Example: William’s painting had a great effect on me; I will never look at the old oak tree the same way.

Meaning: to refuse to accept something Example: Marcus will reject this invitation to the school dance, mostly because he doesn’t want to go.

Meaning: to show something through a picture or vivid words Example: My painting depicts my strong feelings about the ocean; you can tell I like to be near it.

Meaning: state of extreme disturbance Example: Sonia was in an uproar when Katrice spilled black paint all over her drawing.
