General Housekeeping Housekeeping is one of the most important things within the shop A number of hazards can be eliminated through baisc housekeeping PayneWest Insurance3

Eye Protection Eye protection is a primary safety concern in the shop Machine tools produce metal chips Grinders produce small fragments These and other items may be ejected from equipment at high speeds Eye protection should have side shields to prevent materials from getting into the eye from the side Safety glasses should meet the ASNI Z-87 Standard 4PayneWest Insurance

Foot Protection Shop floors can often have razor-sharp metal chips on them Safety shoes with a steel toe may be worn, but are may not required Sandals and open-toe shoes should not to be worn in the shop Likewise, no bare feet Leather shoes are preferred over tennis shoes 5PayneWest Insurance

Ear Protection Hearing protection made be required in some of the areas of the shop or while conducting certain activities Signs may be posted where hearing protection is required OSHA requires hearing protection at 90 dB or greater for an 8 hr workday 6PayneWest Insurance

Shop Towels There constantly needed to keep things clean but when they get oily they are a fire hazard. They must be stored in an appropriate container. 9PayneWest Insurance

Electrical Make sure to check all electrical cords before use If electrical cords are damaged in any way then they need to be taken out of service and replaced or repaired 15PayneWest Insurance

Areas that need to remain clear in shops Exits Breaker boxes Fire Extinguishers Eyewash Stations These areas can be marked off with yellow paint indicating not to store items in those locations 16PayneWest Insurance

Other Lift with Legs – get help with large objects Use compressed air only when necessary and with caution Practice good housekeeping Keep floors/aisles clean Clean up spills Store oily rags in an appropriate location Report injuries Fire extinguishers Know what types are available, what they’re good for, and where they are 17PayneWest Insurance

Other The shop is no place for horseplay Practical joking is also hazardous to your grade Do not think that you are strong enough to stop a machine should you become entangled in moving parts 18PayneWest Insurance

Safety Checklist Do I know how to operate the machine? Are all the guards in place? Am I doing something I should not do? Have I tightened all bolts and clamps? Is the work piece properly secured? Am I wearing proper safety gear? Do I know where the stop switch is? 19PayneWest Insurance
