Climates of the Earth
2
Climate vs. Weather Climate- weather patterns that an area typically experiences during a long period of time.
3
Weather- The condition of the atmosphere in one place during a short period of time.
4
Axis- imaginary line running from the north and south pole.
What is earth’s tilt? Axis- imaginary line running from the north and south pole. 23 ½ degree angle Effect- Temperature- a measure of how hot or cold something is.
5
What is the earth’s revolution?
Revolution- trip around the sun 1 year, 365 ¼ days Equinox- days and nights are the same length. March 21, September 23 Sun directly over the equator
6
Solstice- The longest and shortest day of the year.
June 21, December 22
7
What are some factors affecting Climate?
Latitude- Low latitudes- Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn Warm to hot climate. Polar areas- Arctic Circle, Antarctic Circle receive little heat from the sun. High, Middle Latitude
8
For every 1000 ft. the temperature drops about 3.5 degrees.
Climate Elevation- For every 1000 ft. the temperature drops about 3.5 degrees.
10
Landforms- Windward side- large amounts of rainfall Leeward side- dry and becomes warmer Rain Shadow- the hot, dry result of landforms.
11
Wind and Ocean Currents
Wind Patterns Prevailing winds - winds that blow in fairly constant patterns. Doldrums- windless patterns near the equator.
12
Ocean Currents- Cold and warm “rivers” of seawater.
Caused by the rotation of the earth, moving air, and differences in water temperature in the ocean.
13
World Climate Map Color the climate map from page 66 in the book. DO NOT LABEL THE CITIES. Use TODALSIGS when creating the map. Title, Orientation, Date, Author, Legend Source, Add the Equator, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, Arctic Circle and the Antarctic Circle.
