Mark 12:30-31 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’31 The second is this: `Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”
4
HONORING HONOR means respect or esteem
Showing honor, then, means treating ourselves or others respectfully because we value them highly.
5
LOVE comes from the Grk. word “AGAPE”
Means a sacrificial love that voluntarily suffers inconvenience, discomfort and even death for the benefit of another without expecting any thing in return. It’s not a feeling, it’s a motivation for action that we are free to chose or reject
6
HOW CAN WE HONOR OURSELVES?
By developing a biblically-based SELF-ESTEEM SELF-ESTEEM is a positive or a negative evaluation of the self as in how we feel about it It reflects a person’s over all evaluations of his or her own worth
7
5 STEPS IN ESTABLISHING SELF WORTH
Never speak negatively about yourself Prov. 23:7 Avoid comparisons Everyone is unique Focus on potentials Rom. 12:6 Do not focus on imperfections Discover the true source of confidence
8
3 VIEWS OF EVERY INDIVIDUAL
The view that God has of us. The Lord does not observe people merely outwardly as humans tend to do, rather God looks on the heart. 1Sam. 16:7. 1Kings 8:39 – the Lord knows the hearts of the children of men
9
Hannah acknowledge in her prayer, “God is a God of knowledge and by Him actions are weighed”- 1Sam 2:3 Jesus knew what was in man – Jn. 2:25
10
The opinions that others hold concerning us
Folks may hold an opinion of us that is greatly exaggerated Jesus certainly did not deserve the hateful reproaches that were heaped upon Him Apostle Paul suffered a good deal of unmerited character assassination
11
The perception we have of ourselves
There is that appraisal one makes of himself Honesty demands so that self perception will be develop. we must be careful not to think more highly of ourselves than we ought - Rom. 12:3 We must not attempt to be high-minded or wise in our own concepts – Rom. 11:20
12
It is important that one must have a healthy view of himself
Jesus said that we should love our neighbor as ourselves – Mt. 22:39 Sadly many appear to have a very small appreciations of themselves that it hinders their effective service to God
13
CAUSES OF LOW SELF ESTEEM
Physical features Lack of education Tragic circumstances Physical or emotional abuse Sin
14
CHARACTERISTICS OF LOW SELF-ESTEEM
Substance abuse Sexual promiscuity A critical spirit Materialism
15
THE CURE FOR DIMINISHED SELF ESTEEM
Man possesses dignity by virtue of his divine generation Though blemished by sin man can regain his self esteem through the process of spiritual regeneration
16
What do I need to give honor to myself?
SELF REFLECTION What do I need to give honor to myself?
17
HONORING EACH OTHER
18
ROMANS 13:7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
19
To whom is honor due besides God? And how do we honor others?
20
HOW DO WE HONOR OTHERS? Honoring and respecting others will not happen when a superior or holier-than-thou attitude is present. Paul tells us to "esteem others better than" ourselves (Philippians 2:3).
21
PHILIPPIANS 2:3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,
22
Honoring from a pure motive is possible only when we have a proper perspective of who God is, what we are, and who others are in relation to us and God. It begins with deep honor and respect for God—and thus for all He says.
23
WHOM ELSE SHOULD WE HONOR?
PARENTS: "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you" (Exodus 20:12) CHILDREN: “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.(Ephesians 6:4) SPOUSES: ( Proverbs 31:29) illustrates how a husband praises his wonderful wife: "Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all."
24
WHOM ELSE SHOULD WE HONOR?
WIDOWS should be honored. In I Timothy 5:3, Paul instructs, "Honor widows who are really widows NOTE: Honoring one another touches all of our relationships
25
God wants a world where respect and honor of others is the way of life of its citizens. Romans 12:10 says just that: "Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another."
26
ROMANS 12:10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.
27
WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT
We are to honor one another, but do we? Perhaps we should challenge ourselves to think of ways to show honor to someone—anyone—each day. When was the last time we actively and consciously honored someone? When did we last thank, write a letter of appreciation, or call someone to show respect? If we are not, maybe it is a sign that we think too highly of ourselves and not highly enough of others.
28
EXPRESSION OF HONORING
This is the best time you can honor someone! When we obey God's command to honor all people, we are following our heavenly King and honoring Him.
29
Let’s apply…… Write a simple note of expressing your way of honoring someone.
30
TO GOD BE ALL THE GLORY God wants us to learn to honor everyone.
Imagine a world where everyone honors everyone else!
31
GALATIANS 6:9-10 09Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
