Motion and Energy Motion- An object is in Motion when __________________________ __________________________ __________________________ __________________________
2
Motion and Energy Motion- An object is in Motion when a place or object that can be used to determine if an object is in motion.
3
Examples of Newton’s 1st Law: * a marble will not move unless forced. * once a marble is moving, it doesn’t stop until forced to!
4
* if you don’t wear your seatbelt, you have no force to stop you when the car crashes! since you keep moving, you fly through the windshield! (and DIE)
5
Motion and Energy Speed= _____________________________ __________________________
6
Motion and Energy Speed = Distance divided by Time
7
Motion and Energy Velocity - __________________________ __________________________
8
Motion and Energy Velocity – The speed of an object moving in a particular direction
9
Motion and Energy Velocity – The velocity of the airplane is defined by both its direction and speed.
10
Motion and Energy Velocity – The rate at which the velocity of an object changes is called acceleration. That means that an object is accelerating whenever it speeds up, slows down or changes direction.
11
Motion and Energy A Force is a push or pull. Unbalanced Force acting on an object will change the object’s motion. Equal forces that act on an object in opposite directions are called Balanced Forces.
12
Motion and Energy Newton’s Laws of Motion First law Motion- __________________________ __________________________
13
Motion and Energy Newton’s Laws of Motion First law Motion- objects at rest stay at rest unless a force acts upon it. In two unbalanced forces, friction, air resistance, slow it down.
14
Motion and Energy __________ measures an object’s tendency to remain at rest or keep moving. Inertia is related to mass.
15
Motion and Energy Inertia measures an object’s tendency to remain at rest or keep moving. Inertia is related to mass.
16
Motion and Energy Newton’s Second Law - __________________________ __________________________
17
Motion and Energy Newton’s Second Law – The net force on an object is equal to the mass of the object multiplied by it’s acceleration.
18
Motion and Energy Force = Mass x Acceleration Weight and mass are not the same thing. Weight changes when the acceleration due to gravity changes.
19
Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion: Force = mass X acceleration This means that the magnitude of the force is decided by how big and heavy an object is, and how fast it is moving! x =
20
This makes sense: big, heavy objects have a lot of force. An elephant doesn’t have to move fast! Small objects can have a lot of force if they are moving FAST. -a bullet thrown by hand does nothing, but shot at high speed it can kill!
21
* Things dropped from a moving vehicle don’t fall straight down! * they keep moving forward until another force stops them! 10 N 50 N
22
Motion and Energy Mass remains the _________ no matter what weight is.
23
Motion and Energy Mass remains the same no matter what weight is.
24
Motion and Energy Third Law of Motion - __________________________ ____________________
25
Motion and Energy Third Law of Motion – for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
26
Newton’s Third Law of Motion: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Translation: If you push, you also get pushed back!
27
This is why we are able to jump-- when we push the ground, it pushes back!
28
Motion and Energy Using the second law equation, the object with the larger mass has the smaller ________________________ if the same force is applied.
29
Motion and Energy Using the second law equation, the object with the larger mass has the smaller acceleration rate if the same force is applied.
30
Motion and Energy The three laws of motion describe how any object moves when ___________ acts on it.
