Office of Accountability Research, Evaluation & Assessment 3 What is ACT Compass? Compass is most commonly used as a placement test for two and four year colleges and universities Compass is an online adaptive assessment Compass will evaluate students' levels in Math, Reading, and Writing Skills 1

Office of Accountability Research, Evaluation & Assessment 4 Which subjects will be tested on ACT Compass? The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) has selected the following subject areas: Writing Skills (22 items) Reading (22 items) Pre-Algebra (22 items) Algebra (22 items)

Office of Accountability Research, Evaluation & Assessment 5 Testing Population Determining Which Students Take ACT Compass Students in grade 10 in 2014–2015 will take the ACT Plan in November as part of the statewide Career and College Assessments Based on ACT Plan scores, students who are identified as not yet academically ready for career or college in English (Writing), Reading, and/or Math will take ACT Compass MDE is working with advisory and stakeholder groups to determine the ACT Plan scores that will identify grade 10 students required to take ACT Compass beginning in January If an ACT Plan record does not exist, the student will take ACT Compass in Reading, Mathematics, and Writing Grade 10 students who are eligible must take ACT Compass to meet graduation assessment requirements 2

Office of Accountability Research, Evaluation & Assessment 6 Each high school and secondary ALC is authorized to administer Compass Testing Window: January 5 – March 6, 2015 You may administer Compass any time during the window Test is Untimed - Anticipate 1 to 2 hours to complete (test is adaptive) ACT Compass Time Frame 3

Office of Accountability Research, Evaluation & Assessment 7 Your ACT Compass Account You have received an email welcome notice from ACT Compass You (SAC) are a ‘Campus/School Admin’ ACT Compass Log in site: https://actcompass.org/mn-d062501/#!/loginhttps://actcompass.org/mn-d062501/#!/login Your User Name : SPPS email Password: You set As a Campus Admin, you (SAC) are authorized at Campus and Test Center levels Levels: District (DAC) Campus (SAC) Test Center (SAC and/or Proctor) As Compass Campus School Admin, you can: - Create Test Center(s) at your school (validate before testing) - Register student computers to ACT Compass (required before testing) - View student population at your site(s) - Start and manage test sessions - View and print score reports - Create Test Proctors at your Test Center(s) 4

Verify that you have an existing Test Center in Compass - One generic Test Center has been created for you - You may change the Test Center name and/or add additional Test Centers 2. Register student computers in your Test Center(s) 5 Two Steps:

Accommodations IEP Case Managers will update EasyIEP (EdPlan) to include Compass accommodations; Deadline January 14, 2015 Student list with accommodations will be posted to REA site by January 16 Accommodated materials will be sent to SACs shortly after January 16 Special Ed. accommodated testing takes place late January through March 6 (end of Compass window)

Office of Accountability Research, Evaluation & Assessment 22 Calculators On ACT Compass - Types of Calculators Permitted The following types of calculators are permitted, but only after they are modified as noted: Calculators with paper tape—Remove the tape Calculators that make noise—Turn off the sound Calculators with an infrared data port—Completely cover the infrared data port with heavy opaque material such as duct tape or electrician’s tape (includes Hewlett-Packard HP 38G series, HP 39G series, and HP 48G) Calculators that have power cords—Remove all power/electrical cords 8

Office of Accountability Research, Evaluation & Assessment 23 Calculators On ACT Compass - Types of Calculators Not Permitted The following types of calculators are not permitted: Calculators with built-in computer algebra systems Prohibited calculators in this category include: - Texas Instruments: All model numbers that begin with TI-89 or TI-92 and the TI-Nspire CAS. Note: The TI-Nspire (non-CAS) is permitted. - Hewlett-Packard: HP 48GII and all model numbers that begin with HP 40G, HP 49G, or HP 50G - Casio: Algebra fx 2.0, ClassPad 300 and ClassPad 330, and all model numbers that begin with CFX-9970G Handheld, tablet, or laptop computers, including PDAs Electronic writing pads or pen-input devices—Note: The Sharp EL 9600 is permitted. Calculators built into cell phones or any other electronic communication devices Calculators with a typewriter keypad (letter keys in QWERTY format) Note: Letter keys not in QWERTY format are permitted.
