Secondary… Resource-dependent country (Zambia/Copper or Saudi Arabia/Oil) Durable goods (car) vs. nondurable goods (pizza) First world / Second world / Third world / Fourth world / Fifth world? Weight-losing industry – final product weigh less than input (lumber turned into table) Weight-gaining industry – final product weighs more after processing (flour turned into bread)

+ Location Theory Alfred Weber Producers are always looking for a cheaper way to make their product (cut transportation or labor costs) So products that have a high weight-losing factor should not be shipped far distances (why ship 10 tons of lumber if its going to be cut down in to 2 tons of products?) Iron ore, used to make steel, has a low weight-losing factor. Therefore it can be shipped long distances, it is considered distance elastic

+ Dependency Theory Raul Prebisch Holds that LDCs and NICs are highly dependent on investment and technology from MDCs for jobs. If MDCs pull out investments, their economies could collapse Furthermore, much of the money made in LDCs is needed to pay off loans or investments to MDCs. So while an LDC may become extremely productive they might not have much to show for it. Breaking the dependency means money has to stay in the country
