5 TOM TORLAKSON State Superintendent of Public Instruction California K-12 High Speed Network As of November 2013, 88% of California School Districts and almost 7,800 schools (83%) are connected to CalREN (California Research Education Network) through K12HSN In this aggregation model, districts are able to procure affordable connections to one of the 72 K12HSN Node Sites (primarily county offices of education and geographically challenged locations, LAUSD, CDE) 5

6 TOM TORLAKSON State Superintendent of Public Instruction Field Support The CDE is coordinating a number of field supports some of which include: Seventeen Smarter Balanced Field Test in- person workshops for local educational agency (LEA) coordinators between February 5 and February 24. Northern California and Southern California County Offices of Education Provide testing coordinators and district technology staff with information regarding roles and responsibilities, test administration, the TIDE system and technical infrastructure, accessibility and accommodations and test security. 6

The CDE is coordinating a number of field supports some of which include: Informational training videos and, in collaboration with Smarter Balanced, webinars to assist LEAs in preparing for a successful Field Test. Intended to help districts, teachers and students become familiar with various components of the Field Test, including how to use tools in the on-line system, becoming familiar with Performance Tasks, as well as many other topics. Several training videos were released on January 28, 2014. Many others are scheduled for release in early February 2014. The CDE is coordinating a number of field supports some of which include: Videos for teachers, students, parents and the community intended to provide practical, non- technical information to help schools and communities understand the value of the spring Field Test and to help them prepare for the test. These videos are in development and will be released soon. Practice Test tutorial intended to help students and teachers become familiar with the Practice Test, the technology and the test items. This tutorial is in development and will be released soon. 8

The CDE is coordinating a number of field supports some of which include: Print materials, letters, brochures and checklists intended to help LEAs communicate important information about the Field Test to schools, teachers, students and parents. These materials are in development. Instructional module intended to assist teachers with integrate teaching and learning aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) with the necessary skills and strategies needed for taking the spring Field Test. This teaching tool is currently in development. 9
