Booth 917 ALA Booth 917 What is Resource Description and Access? RDA is the standard for cataloging that is replacing the current standard, Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2 nd ed. (AACR2). The Library of Congress implemented RDA as its cataloging standard by March 31, 2013. RDA is intended to describe all formats for better discovery. Many abbreviations, such as [S.l.], [s.n.], and [et al.], are changed to standard English words.

Booth 917 ALA Booth 917 Why are we implementing RDA? RDA aims to provide catalog data that will help libraries define our presence on the Web With well-defined and structured data elements Clearly indicating relationships among works and the people responsible for them Clearer language for our patrons Data that is easier for computers to manipulate --Lori Robare Monographic Team Leader University of Oregon Libraries

Booth 917 ALA Booth 917 Make your catalog consistent with RDA Hybrid records are acceptable. Different cataloging rules such as AACR2 and RDA can exist side by side. Split indexes are not acceptable. AACR2 forms and RDA forms of access points may differ. Good authority control will fix most of these differences. MARCIVE’s RDA Conversion Service, which includes authorities processing, offers a more comprehensive and cost-effective approach to making your catalog consistent.
