Chinese Brush Painting Aim: to capture the inner essence of the subject—its energy, life force, spirit- not just its outer appearance. Often portrayed nature: flowers, landscapes, animals To accomplish his goal, the Chinese painter only used black ink, and limited color. Drawing with an ink brush comes from calligraphy (the art of writing) (from kallos= beauty, graphien=to write- Greek: beautiful writing.)
15
Chinese Brush Strokes Free spirited, spontaneous brush strokes No sketching first No correcting your brush stroke Little use of perspective or realistic portrayal, gives the painter freedom to better express his subjective feelings.
