1 CP English 10 Please turn in your completed Sound Device Charts concerning “The Raven” to your class bin. Today, you will be: - Learning of the famous poet, Walt Whitman -Completing a TPCASTT assignment over his work “Song of Myself (33)” -Assigned a poetry assignment

2 Walt Whitman 1819-1892

3 Whitman: The Child -Born on May 31, 1819 to farmers in West Hills, Long Island. -Ancestors from England and Holland -7 brothers and sisters -Lived with both experiences of country life and urban life in Brooklyn. -Went to school until he was 11.

4 -Worked as an office clerk and printer’s assistant, and eventually taught school -He never went to college -Worked as a journalist during his 20’s. -Traveled to New Orleans on an assignment and gathered much knowledge about the diverse American life.

5 Whitman: The Person -Sociable -Loved Company -Traveler -Public Spokesman of the people -Prophet of Progress

6 Themes of His Poetry -Universal Brotherhood -Bright Destiny of Democracy

7 Career: -Published Leaves of Grass in 1855 - 9 revised copies until his “deathbed” edition in 1891 - Considered an epic with the poet as the hero -Became famous for this one work within his own lifetime.

8 Writing Style: -Extravagant words -Careless with repetition and self-contradiction -Big Picture -Uses lists, trying to catalog his observations

9 Style Vocabulary: Cadence: long, easy, sweep of sound that echoes the Bible and the speeches of orators and preachers. Free Verse: poetry without rhyme or meter.

10 “Song of Myself (33)” – pg 316 As we bump pass read this poem, you should be completing the provided TPCASTT chart. Also, consider the different “shoes” Whitman is stepping into. Consider this as possible inspiration for your poem due Friday. (FIVE SENSES STRATEGY.)
