INTRODUCTION True Worship is not interested in the created but the Creator. True Worship is not limited to one hour a week. True Worship is not for us, but for God. Because God desires our worship, we must learn how to worship him.

The word Worship appears the first time in the Bible in Genesis 22:5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” Genesis 22:5 (ESV)

From this episode in the life of Abraham in Genesis 22:1-19 we will learn what he can teach us about the true worship of God.

THE ELEMENTS OF TRUE WORSHIP: 1. REVELATION

After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here am I.” He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” Genesis 22:1-2 (ESV)

True worship is based on the revelation of God

2. PREPARATION

So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. Genesis 22:3 (ESV)

We need to make the appropriate preparations in order to worship God.

3. SEPARATION

On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” Genesis 22:4-5 (ESV)

We need to separate ourselves from anything that would draw our attention away from God.

4. DEDICATION

And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here am I, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham said, “God will provide for

himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together. When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. Genesis 22:6-10 (ESV)

True worship is always costly. True worship always requires us to give up our best for God’s best.

5. PROCLAMATION

But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here am I.” He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns.

And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.” Genesis 22:11-14 (ESV)

Abraham called the place “The Lord Will Provide” -- Jehovah Jireh. By doing so he was proclaiming the nature and work of God. He was declaring who God is and what God does. That is praise and worship.

Praise is proclaiming what God has done. Worship is proclaiming who God is.

THE BENEFITS OF TRUE WORSHIP: 1. RESTORATION

But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here am I.” He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” Genesis 22:11-12 (ESV)

Isaac was restored to his father.

2. CONFIRMATION

And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore.

And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.” Genesis 22:15-18 (ESV)

God confirmed his covenant with Abraham. God declared that He would bless Abraham because Abraham had worshiped him. True worship results in the blessing of the worshiper.

CONCLUSION True worship is not about the performance of music and drama or the sermon. It’s not about pleasing you or me. It’s all about pleasing God and expressing our appreciation and love to our Lord and Savior.

PRAYER BENEDICTION

So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beersheba. And Abraham lived at Beersheba. Genesis 22:19 (ESV)

After Abraham had this beautiful worship experience on the mountain top he walked off the mountain and returned home to Beersheba. The true test of our worship comes not from what takes place in this sanctuary on Sunday morning. The true test of our worship comes when we walk out those doors and return home.

305 “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus” I have decided to follow Jesus I have decided to follow Jesus No turning back, no turning back.

My cross I'll carry ‘till I see Jesus My cross I'll carry ‘till I see Jesus No turning back, no turning back. 305 “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus”
