Building Neighborhoods And Families

Our History Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity (SCHFH) is a domestic affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, dedicated to serving low income families with the education and resources necessary to successful homeownership. When this affiliate was established in 1986 as a grassroots organization with an all volunteer Board and Staff, it was known as Habitat for Humanity of Clayton County. In 1994, the name was changed to Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity. The original volunteers organized around Morrow Baptist Church and the need to support the availability of safe, affordable housing options for low income families in Clayton County. In its first years of operation, Habitat for Humanity of Clayton County relied on the faith community to support its building efforts. The organization’s first official office was donated space in the basement of Jonesboro United Methodist Church in 1992. SCHFH obtained a lease for space at the old Riverdale Fire Station on Flint River Rd. and eventually a grant to purchase it. The organization operated out of the office for many years before outgrowing the space. Greater demands for warehousing of large donations, larger education facilities to accommodate growing numbers of homeowners and larger applicant classes, and an increasing staff due to serving more families led SCHFH to request and receive assistance from Clayton County Government to purchase an office, learning center and warehouse location off of Tara Boulevard in Jonesboro in 2011, where the affiliate resides today. Today SCHFH serves families from the 13 county metro region with homeownership opportunities in Clayton, Henry and Fayette counties.

Volunteer “HFH offers people a way to put their faith into action” -Millard Fuller The SCHFH volunteer experience is unique. Volunteers engage in hands on community building with little or vast experience to share. They serve with friends and make new ones and work alongside the beneficiary of their labor. These beneficiaries are people in your community; they drive your kids to school, deliver your mail and protect your safety. At the end of the day, you can see the impact that you have made in just a few short hours. We value any time and skill that you would like to share with us. Beyond working on the actual homes, we have a variety of other opportunities available that will help us to provide decent and affordable housing for those in need. We invite you to volunteer on one of our committees, teach a course for our homeowners, become an advocate, and/or host a fundraiser. Please take a moment to review our current needs to see if there is an effort that you feel best matches your interest. If you would like to volunteer in any of these categories, please complete our Volunteer Registration and waiver form and a member of our team will contact you soon. Everyone must be at least 16 years old to volunteer on a construction site. Please visit our Youth Volunteer Opportunities for those under 16 years of age. Thank you for your time and we look forward to serving with you!Volunteer Registration

Invest “Habitat for Humanity is building much more than houses. By building hope it is building relationships, strengthening communities, and nurturing families.” – Paul Newman, Actor Investing in low income homeownership opportunities as a team building volunteer experience means changing the lives of families and communities. Building a home alongside a family in the process of realizing their dream is life changing for those who volunteer to be a part of it. It is tangible. It is permanent. There is no other experience like it, and it touches and changes those who share the experience as a team. On the build site, CEOs are carpenters and painters alongside their administrative staff; the importance of family is front and center; and camaraderie is being built as well as shelter.

Donate You can make an impact. You can do so locally. The person who will feel that impact is someone you know, or someone you could know. You interact with a potential Habitat partner family every day. They are your teachers, your mail carriers, your fire fighters, your public safety officers, your bus drivers, and your day care workers. They work in hospitals, schools, court houses, stores and restaurants. Habitat partners are working families whose income does not allow them to qualify for traditional homeownership lending opportunities. Our partners are mothers, daughters, uncles, grandmothers and brothers. They are those who are ready to do anything they can for the chance to own a home, or to improve the one in which they live. The impact of your support of SCHFH is to create the opportunity for someone in your community to earn a home and a zero percent mortgage; or to caulk the windows of an elderly neighbor who has been hanging blankets in the windows for two years; or to rehabilitate the foreclosed and derelict home on the block two streets away; or to teach a homeowner partner how to open and manage their first ever bank account. The impact of your decision to support Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity is simply to change a life in big and small ways, tangibly and forever.
