© Metataxis 2012 Designing the information-centric environment How important are the traditional structures of knowledge organisation schemes in a twenty-first century organisation? Is a fully-ISO compliant thesaurus meet all the organisation’s requirements for findability? ‘ The “scientific” sense of a taxonomy as a strict hierarchy is attractive from a distance, but rarely useful in practice when building KM taxonomies.’ Patrick Lambe, 2007 What do we need?

© Metataxis 2012 Designing the information-centric environment What do we know? 1.Users look for information in different ways 2.Organisations want to improve findability, but don’t want to spend years developing a full thesaurus 3.Means of communications and language itself are changing ever faster

Users look for information in different ways The right thing, or known item seeking (search) Exploratory search (browse) Exhaustive research (search and browse) I’ve seen you before, or re- finding From Information Architecture for the World Wide Web, by Morville and Rosenfeld, 2007

© Metataxis 2012 Designing the information-centric environment Different ways need different semantic tools Metadata Controlled vocabularies Navigational taxonomies Thesauri Broader terms/Narrower terms (and may be explicitly displayed) Synonyms (and misspellings) Related terms (you may also be interested in…) Facets Richer (ontological) relationships (Disease x has symptoms y) Like Folksonomies Search and navigation analyses ….

Cost/benefit analysis for developing a full set of semantic tools is difficult to quantify Surely Google (or FAST or…) is all we need? Can we make do with a ‘one-size-fits-all’ vocabulary?
