PEMSolutions Technology Training The New Early Warning System
2
2 TestNav TM Early Warning System The TestNav™ Early Warning System (EWS) is designed to save student responses locally in the event of a network interruption. The EWS saves the student's responses to an encrypted backup file so the student can either continue testing or exit the system without losing data. The Department of Technology (DOT) designated that TestNav™ will save to the F: drive as the primary and the C: drive as secondary save locations. When connectivity is restored and the students resume into the test, the locally saved responses are transmitted to the testing server and added to the responses already stored there. This activity occurs in the background of the test delivery software while the software continues to provide test questions to the student.

TestNav™ will find the correct response file A combination of the test ticket ID combined with the session token is used to uniquely identify a Student Response File (SRF) A SRF can only be used the next time the student resumes into a test TestNav™ will only delete a SRF if it is successfully uploaded. Successful uploads Whenever a student hits “Exit” or “Submit” and the test is successfully exited or submitted.
4
4 Reasons Why TestNav EWS Triggers 1.TestNav™ client determines that neither Early Warning Save Location is viable. 2.TestNav™ is unable to download portions of a test. The two situations listed above will result in immediate notification to the student. 3.TestNav™ is unable to upload responses. This situation will result in notification to the student at the time of test submission.

11 Other Error – Computer Crashes If this occurs: 1.Contact command center. 2.Restart student on same computer. 3.Have command center “Resume.” In some cases, the computer will stop responding. This issue is no different from last year.
12
12 Resume When a student is exited from a test, either intentionally or by computer error, the command can “Resume” the test. Command center uses “Resume.” The system determines if a Student Response File (SRF) should be used. If no SRF is found, the student will receive an error screen. The examiner or proctor can click “skip upload” on the student’s screen to continue the test.
13
13 Issues/Special Considerations Network Goes Down 1.If the local network is lost as students submit, there could be many EWS messages activated at once. Contact REA and DOT. 2.The primary save location is NOT valid. The SRF will be saved on the hard drive (alternate save location). You must: Record the exact computer number and location on the student’s test ticket OR copy the SRF files to a flash drive. 3.If students finish testing, but their answers are not uploaded, you CANNOT stop the session until the SRF is uploaded. Contact REA.
14
14 Issues/Special Considerations 4.The STC can come back once the network is restored and login using the student ticket and submit the test. 5.Remember your ability to check transmission of test data in PEMSolutions. “Responses” on the Session Details screen.
15
15 Other Issues 1.Disable Popup Blocking Software (Administrative Site). 2.Applications that launch automatically. Any applications that may automatically launch on a computer should be configured not to launch during testing sessions. Common applications that may launch automatically include: Anti-virus software performing automatic updates Power management software on laptops warning of low batteries Screen Savers E-mail with auto message notification
