Coastal Zones The Coastal Region

What is the coast? Why do we study it?
What are different types of coasts? Why is it important to understanding coastal processes? What is coastal management?

Mississippi River Delta off the coast of Louisiana

Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia

A coastal lagoon off the coast of North Carolina

How are they the same? Different? Why?

Coastal zones are the interface between the land and water.
They are important because the majority of the world’s population lives in these zones. They are continually changing due to the interaction between water and land, and by human activity.

Coastal Ocean The portion of the global ocean where physical, biological, and chemical processes are directly affected by land. The part of the ocean that covers the continental margin.

Coastal Zone Includes the coastal ocean, as well as the portion of the land adjacent to the coast that influences coastal waters.

Shore vs Coast Shore: Coast:
A zone that lies between the lowest tide level and the highest tide level on land. Coast: Extends inland from the shore as far as ocean- related features can be found.

Shore vs Coast The shoreline is the perimeter of the land along the water’s edge, measured as accurately as possible. It changes because of the water’s action. The coastline follows the general line of the coast, but is sometimes measured across a bay or inlet to join the opposite side. Boundary between coast and shore.
