Pedon PC - Data Entry ► Import GPS waypoints ► Automatically creates a new transect, site, and pedon record, linking the transect to the pedon. ► Populates LatLongs, UTMS, Elevation, Observation Date, Describer Name, and Area Overlap. ► Requirements: Garmin GPS.txt file created from DNR Garmin. Standard Site/Transect naming convention. ► ALASKA: 2digitYear-2characterDescriberInitials-3digitTransectID-2digitStop# ► Examples: ► User Transect ID:06DG111 ► User Site ID: 06DG11101 ► Or manually create a new Transect and Site.

► Use the MN DNR Garmin stand alone application to upload waypoints and save them as a.txt file. If you don’t have the MN DNR Garmin application, you can obtain the most recent version from: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/mis/gis/tools/arcview/extensions/DNRGarmin/DNRGarmin.html http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/mis/gis/tools/arcview/extensions/DNRGarmin/DNRGarmin.html Plug GPS in to the serial port of computer. Turn GPS on. Open MN DNR Garmin application. Navigate to Waypoint >> Waypoint Properties ► On the projection tab set projection using the drop down list (Example: NAD_1983_UTM_Zone_6N) ► On the waypoint tab, REMOVE the check marks from all BUT the following fields: type, ident, lat, long, y_proj, x_proj, comment, altitude. Navigate to Waypoint >> Download ► Records from GPS should appear in the dialog window. Once records are as you want them to appear (you can remove unwanted records, rename records, etc.) navigate to File >> Save To >> File and save as.txt file using the following name pattern: 2 digit year, 2-character describer initials (Example: 06FG.txt) Pedon PC GPS Import

► Navigate to C:\pedon and open the pedon_pc.mdb file. ► From the Main Menu, click: Setup > Import Data > Import Waypoints ► If you haven’t yet downloaded your GPS waypoints as a.txt file, you can click the blue DNR Garmin button to open DNR Garmin. ► Click the Browse button and navigate to where your gps.txt file is located, then click OK. ► Select the desired import options and click OK Alaska Uses the “Date, Describer, Garmin Ident Field” Format. ► Example: 06MC00501 Be sure to enter values for the Describer and Year fields. ► If you intend to create transect records with the sites and pedons, pick “Yes” from the Build Transect drop-down. ► Enter the number of unique digits for the sites and transects. Alaska uses a 5 digit number (00501) where the first 3 digits are for the transect# and the last 2 digits are for the stop#. ► Click OK to import the gps waypoints.

Pedon PC Data Entry – Transect Form ► IMPORTANT NOTE: A transect is NOT required for a site (or pedon) to exist. A pedon MAY be linked to a transect. So a pedon must exist prior to adding it to a transect. Manually adding a NEW site/pedon is covered in the Site Data Entry form section of this tutorial. ► Navigate to Forms > Transect Data Entry ► Select the transect of interest by typing it in the uppermost User Transect ID box (or selecting it using the drop-down). To add a new Transect manually, click the Add New button, type the Transect Name where it says “Type TsectID Here.”, then click the Add New button again. ► To add an EXISTING Pedon to the current Transect manually, select it from the User Pedon ID box… then click the ADD button. ► To remove a Pedon from the current Transect, select the Pedon in the table below and click the Remove button. ► Double-click the User Pedon ID to proceed to the Site Data Entry Form. ► If you’ve used the GPS Import function… A transect, site, and pedon could have been added automatically with several fields already populated. Choose one of the Transects you just added and check to see that the correct Pedons were added. If you’d like to attribute a MUSYM to the entire Transect, enter it here. ► NOTE: To attribute composition estimates to a transect, you MUST have a MUSYM populated (pick Null if nothing else). Enter Polygon Composition Estimates here. Double-click the User Pedon ID to proceed to the Site Data Entry Form.

Pedon PC - Data Entry ► If you need to add mapunits or components to your workspace legend… Navigate to Forms > NASIS Legend Builder. ► Click the AreaSymbol Dropdown and make sure you’re adding the mapunit or component to the correct area. The area with the most components and mapunits is listed toward the top. ► To change what areas appear in this list, go to Setup > Customize Choice Lists > Edit Choice List and either show or hide the area of interest. The list is defaulted to Alaska’s MLRA and Non-MLRA Soil Survey Areas

Pedon PC - Data Entry ► The list summarizes the legend data for each area. Mu_c - Number of Mapunits (as Correlated) Mu_s - Number of Mapunits (as Sampled) Comp_c - Number of Components (as Correlated) Comp_s - Number of Components (as Sampled)

Pedon PC - Data Entry ► Make sure the Mapunit and Component Legends each have a “Null” record. This allows you to catalog any records in your dataset that have null entries for either mapunit or component. ► To add a new mapunit to the legend, Type the mapunit symbol here. ► Note: Access doesn’t actually create a record until you leave the new row.

Pedon PC Data Entry – Site Form Basic Navigation Controls ► Use the record selectors to view a different site on the site form. If you linked to the form from the Transect form, only the sites from that transect will appear. To go back to the Transect form, double-click the Transect ID. ► The Component field uses the Component Legend as a domain. Double-clicking this field will open up the OSD if it is an established series. ► The Sub Group field automatically populates the higher taxonomic fields. Double clicking this field will open up the OSD Taxonomic Query. ► Place a check mark next to this option to display the hyperlinked photos for each site. This option will slow down the form according to each.jpg’s file size. ► IMPORTANT: When editing horizon data, make sure to place a check mark next to the Edit First option. This allows editing of color, texture, fragments, structure, and roots at the horizon level. Turn the option off when navigating from site to site. ► The code that this feature runs is VERY slow when pulling data across the shared drive. ► Use this toggle switch to turn on/off additional tabs. ► Select the Show all tabs Option and notice the tabs that were added. Alaska collects a streamlined dataset. Many other fields and tabs are hidden on the form.

► Select the Show all tabs Option, then view the Commands tab. Use this button to add a new site manually. ► Click the button and enter the User Site ID at the prompt. Jump to the Choice List Form. This button limits the Geomorphic Feature and Parent Material Kind choice lists by the show/hide. ► (defaulted to Alaska Tech. Pedon PC Data Entry – Site Form Stock Access Form Features ► Using Record Selectors The gray box at the left of each record (row) is a record selector. The current record has a black arrow. To delete a record, click the record selector for that row and either press the delete button on your keyboard or the delete record button on the toolbar. ► IMPORTANT NOTE: To delete an entire site, you must first delete any corresponding pedon. ► Working with columns on datasheet subforms. Columns can be moved around using the stock “drag and drop” feature. ► Click on the column header (it will turn black). ► Hold down the left mouse key and drag the column to another spot. Hide/Unhide Columns ► Place your mouse in the MicroKnd box. ► This is actually only one field from the site observation table. ► Navigate to Format > Unhide Columns (Menu bar) ► Place a check mark next to one of the hidden columns to unhide it. Notice how many columns are hidden.
