1 OBJECTIVES  We will apply health knowledge and skills to the development and analysis of personal goals to achieve and maintain long-term health and wellness.  I will be able to demonstrate my understanding of nutrition.  I will be able to identify the 3 nutrients that provide my body with energy/calories.

4 NUTRITION Nutrition – Process by which the body takes in & uses food. Nutrients – Substance within the food that the body needs to function properly. Six Nutrients: 1.Protein (20%) 2.Carbohydrates (50%) 3.Vitamins 4.Minerals 5.Fat (30%)P.C.F = Calories = Energy 6.Water

9 CARBOHYDRATES Carbohydrates – The Sugars and Starches found in food. 1.Simple Carbs – Forms of sugar that are easy for the body to process. These sugars are Fructose and Glucose (Found in fruits and veggies). Glucose – Form of sugar that goes directly into the blood stream & provides quick energy. Glycogen – When glucose is not used, it’s converted into glycogen and stored in the body.

10 CARBOHYDRATES 2. Complex Carbs – Difficult to break down & use by the body. Starches are an example of complex carbohydrates. Dietary Fiber - Comes from the non-digestive part of plants that helps remove waste.

12 FATS Lipids – The nutrient that contains the most concentrated form of energy. Lipids (Fat) is an essential nutrient. To function well, your body needs at least a small daily intake of fat. Although fats are important nutrients, many people eat more fats then they need. Types of Fats: S aturated Fats – Solid at room temperature. o Example: Grease | Butter | Animal Fat. Unsaturated Fats – Liquid at room temp. o Example: Peanut Oil |Olive Oil | Vegetable Oil

13 FATS Cholesterol – A waxy, fat-like substance produced by the body. Found only in foods that come from animals such as butter, eggs, and meats. *As cholesterol levels in the body increase, the risk of heart and artery disease increases* NOT ALL CHOLESTEROL IS BAD (Just like Fats) Two Types of Cholesterol: HDL (Healthy) – Removes LDL {Exercise also removes LDL} LDL (Lousy) – Deposits on the wall of blood vessels Clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLonh7ZesKs

14 PROTEIN Protein – Found in every cell. Builds and repairs all body tissues. Amino Acids = Building Blocks of protein.
