Bastante – English IV

Chapter 3  Weeks of torture pass and O’Brien tells Winston there are three stages to his reintegration:  Learning - the discovery that the Party has absolute power over you  Understanding - there is no hope for anyone  Acceptance  O’Brien is one of many true authors of the book Winston thinks Goldstein wrote.  Representative of the loss of Winston’s hope for the Party to be overthrown

Chapter 3 (cont’d)  Winston replies to O’Brien that the Party seeks power for the good of the majority  This is not the answer O’Brien wants. He corrects Winston and tells him the Party seeks power for power’s sake  “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face – forever,” – O’Brien  What does the Party have the power to control that shocks Winston?  Reality

Chapter 3 (cont’d)  Winston insists that the spirit of man will defeat the Party  O’Brien tells Winston he is the last man  List three ways Winston has physically changed:  Emaciated, deathly thin  Partially bald  Only has 11 teeth left (10 after O’Brien pulls one out with ease)

Chapter 3 (cont’d)  After everything Winston has gone through, there is one degradation he has not suffered: he has not betrayed Julia.  Because Winston is a special case, he may not be shot for a while…but it will happen in the end.  Why does Winston ask when he will be shot?  He knows that by dying without betraying Julia, he will have remained himself and defeated the Party.

Chapter 4  List seven ways Winston’s imprisonment has improved as weeks/months passed:  Tortured less  Moved to a more comfortable room  Put on weight  Given three meals a day  Allowed to wash  Receives dentures  Given clean clothing  Winston regains hope  He continues to dream of Julia, his mother, and the Golden Country, indicating that the Party has not taken total control over his mind

Chapter 4 (cont’d)  Winston realizes that his inner heart has not been converted when he wakes up from a dream crying out for Julia  His plan now is not to overthrow the party and find hope of freedom, but instead to win a private victory over the Party, getting his revenge as he continues to hate them as he dies

Chapter 4 (cont’d)  O’Brien asks Winston what his true feelings toward Big Brother are  When Winston answers that he hates Big Brother, he is ordered to Room 101
