Background Guantanamo Bay – since 1902 (Spanish-American War), the US has had a military base on Cuba o US interest on the island Jan 7, 1959 – Castro, through revolution, becomes leader of Cuba o US refuses to give Castro economic assistance o Feb 1960 - Castro forced to turn to the USSR for aid

Bay of Pigs March 1960 – President Eisenhower plans a secret invasion to Cuba using the CIA to overthrow Castro o JFK learns of the plan when he arrives and continues The plan proves a complete failure Impact o JFK is humiliated and seen as imperialist o Castro gains further support and comes closer to the USSR

Cuban Missile Crisis 1962 - U-2 spy planes over Cuba found nuclear instillations being built Context o Congressional Elections upcoming o Failure of the Bay of Pigs still fresh on everyone’s mind – JFK is weak on communism o Poll 62% Americans unhappy with Cuba o First time, USSR nuclear weapons can reach the US What would you do if you were JFK? Think about what you will tell the US public Reaction? 1.Do Nothing – US have nukes that can reach the USSR. Only fair now. 2.Offer a deal – remove nukes in Cuba for Turkey 3.Invasion of Cuba – remove Castro 4.Blockade Cuba – keep USSR away 5.Bomb missile sites 6.Use nuclear weapons

Cuban Missile Crisis JFK orders a naval blockade o Oct 24 – USSR ships stop in front of US blockade Black Saturday – Oct 27 o USSR demands US remove missiles in Turkey o U2 spy plane is shot down over Cuba o US demands USSR remove missiles or the US would invade Cuba Oct 28 – reach an agreement o Public - Khrushchev will remove weapons (Nov 1) in Cuba if US doesn’t invade o Private – US removes weapons in Turkey

Consequences 1.Hot Line is created o Direct line of communication 2.3 months after, US removes nukes in Turkey and Italy 3.USSR determined to have nuclear capability with US (achieved 1972) 4.US convinced USSR won’t go to war over another communist country (Vietnam)
