What is a Political Machine? An organized group that controlled the activities of a political party in a city and offered services to voters and businesses in exchange for political or financial support.

Precinct Captain 1.The precinct captain worked to get support and votes on a city block or neighborhood. 2.The precinct workers reported to the ward boss. Corruption

Ward Boss 1.The ward boss worked to gain the vote in all of the precincts in a ward of the city. 2.They often helped the poor and provided services.

City Boss 1.Controlled activities of the party in the city. 2.Controlled thousands of municipal jobs. Boss Tweed

Corruption 1.Election Fraud 1.Added names to voting lists. 2.People voted more than once. 2.Graft—Kickbacks from contracts. 3.City Boss controls police force, so there is nobody to stop it.

Tammany Hall 1.Tammany Hall was the Democratic Machine in New York City. 2.Boss Tweed ran the operation 3.From 1869-1871, the Tweed Ring pocketed about $200 million.
